Sign in to OneDrive on the web with the same Microsoft account used on the stolen laptop, because the November 2023 device image shown during Windows setup is separate from the current files stored in OneDrive.
1. Check the actual OneDrive cloud contents
- Open OneDrive in a browser.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account used on the stolen laptop.
- Open My files and use Search everything to locate recent files by filename, description, date, or file type.
- Check Personal Vault, if used.
- If you have more than one personal, work, or school Microsoft account, repeat this check under each account. Missing files are commonly stored under a different account.^1^
If files dated through October 31, 2026 appear there, they are recoverable immediately. Download critical files first, then connect the new laptop:
- Select the OneDrive cloud icon by the Windows clock.
- Open Help & Settings → Settings → Account.
- If the wrong account is connected, select Unlink this PC → Unlink account.
- Start OneDrive and sign in with the account containing the current files.
Unlinking does not delete the cloud files; they remain available through OneDrive on the web.^2^
2. Recover missing or changed cloud files
Because the theft occurred only a few days ago, check these recovery locations promptly:
- Deleted files: On OneDrive.com, select Recycle bin, select the files or folders, and choose Restore. Personal-account deleted items can normally be restored for 30 days unless they were permanently removed from the Recycle Bin.^3^
- Overwritten files: Right-click an affected file, choose Version history, select the required version, and choose Restore. Version history works with all file types and is retained for 30 days.^4^
- Many files changed or deleted: If you have Microsoft 365, open OneDrive.com and select Settings → Options → Restore your OneDrive. Choose a custom date and time immediately before the unwanted changes, review the activity feed, and select Restore.^5^
Caution: A full OneDrive restore rolls back all selected activity. Files created after the restore point are moved to the OneDrive Recycle Bin, so use individual Recycle Bin or Version History recovery when only a few files are affected.
Files that existed only on the stolen laptop and were never synchronized to OneDrive cannot be recovered from the cloud. The 2023 restore entry only identifies an available Windows Backup snapshot; Windows Backup restores backed-up folders, settings, app references, and preferences—not every local file or installed program.^6^
3. Secure the stolen laptop
Since the password has already been changed, do not repeat that step. If Find My Device was enabled before the theft:
- Go to Microsoft account devices and sign in.
- Select Find My Device.
- Select the stolen laptop and choose Find.
- On the map, select Lock → Next.
Microsoft also recommends reporting the theft to law enforcement and your insurer; the device serial number may be listed under Info and support.^7^
