Open Word or Excel and sign in with the Microsoft account used to purchase Microsoft 365; you do not need to reinstall the apps or enter a product key.
Activate the installed apps
- Visit https://account.microsoft.com/services and sign in with the account used for the purchase.
- Confirm that the yearly Microsoft 365 subscription appears as active. The free web apps alone do not indicate that the account has a paid subscription.^1^
- Open Word, Excel, or another installed Office app.
- Select Sign In or Activate when prompted.
- Enter the same email address and password used in step 1.
- If asked which license to use, select the Microsoft 365 subscription.
- Close and reopen all Office apps. You should now be able to create, edit, and save files.
If the subscription does not appear under Services & subscriptions, try any other Microsoft account that may have been used for the purchase and search your email accounts for the purchase confirmation.^1^
If Office keeps using the previous license
The existing apps may still have an older license saved locally. Remove only the stored licensing data:
- Quit every Office app.
- Download Microsoft’s Office License Removal Tool from the official instructions below.
- Open the downloaded
.pkg file and select Continue.
- If macOS reports an unidentified developer, Control-click the file → Open.
- Select Install and enter the Mac administrator password if requested.
- When removal finishes, open Word or Excel.
- Sign in with the account associated with the new Microsoft 365 subscription.
- Choose Microsoft 365 if prompted to select between licenses, then restart the Mac.^2^
The removal tool clears saved Office licenses from the Mac; have the correct Microsoft account credentials available before running it.
If activation still fails
Use Microsoft’s Mac activation troubleshooting page for the exact message or error code. It covers No license found, repeated sign-in prompts, installation limits, and account-sign-in failures.^1^
