How to fix OneDrive Infinite loading screen when trying to add Onedrive folder to C:\\ drive

Hello,

Until last week, our organization placed the OneDrive sync folder directly at the root of the C: drive, using this path:

C:\OneDrive - Tenant

Our process was to manually create C:\OneDrive - Tenant, then open OneDrive setup and select that folder as the OneDrive location. This worked reliably on OneDrive build 26.189.0928.009.

Since build 26.195.1006.0007 (64-bit) was released, selecting that same folder causes OneDrive to hang on an endless loading screen.

What I’ve observed:

  • It is inconsistent across users. Some users can still set it up without problems, while others get the infinite loading screen.
  • Retrying sometimes works. It can take 5–10 attempts before the folder is accepted.
  • It doesn’t stay fixed. Even when it works, the sync breaks again a few days later.
  • Nesting the folder avoids the issue. If I place the folder one level deeper (for example, C:\SomeFolder\OneDrive - Tenant), it works with no problems.

Has anyone else seen this behavior since the 26.195 update? Is this a known issue, or is there a fix or workaround that lets us keep the OneDrive folder directly under C:?

    Dear Luca,

As a forum moderator, I genuinely wish I could directly review your devices or OneDrive sync logs to diagnose and fix this for you. Unfortunately, my role here is limited to providing general guidance and solutions that can be applied by users.

Your results point to a regression in build 26.195.1006.0007 when the sync folder is placed directly under C. Since the nested path works every time, tenant permissions, licensing and network connectivity are unlikely to be the cause. The OneDrive release notes don't list this as a known issue for 26.195. A newer Production Ring build, 26.198.1011.0006, has started rolling out, so it's worth testing that build on an affected device first. Until this is fixed, the nested path you found (for example, C:\SomeFolder\OneDrive - Tenant) is the most reliable workaround for new setups.

If the newer build doesn't help, I recommend that the Global Admin in your organization create a service request with Microsoft Support. A technical support engineer can perform a remote session to investigate the situation, verify the backend configurations, and run any necessary synchronization tools to resolve the problem. If the issue requires further attention, they can escalate it to a specialized team for deeper analysis. For detailed instructions on how to get support, please refer to Get support - Microsoft 365 admin. If you don't know who your IT administrator is, please refer to this article: How do I find my Microsoft 365 admin? - Microsoft Support

For additional assistance, use this link to find the appropriate contact number from your region: Contact Microsoft customer support | Microsoft Support

I truly hope you get your issue resolved swiftly. Please know that even though I can't directly intervene, directing you to the correct, specialized support is the most effective help I can provide from my position. Thank you for your patience and understanding. Please let me know if you need anything else. Wishing you all the best.
