Word, Excel and PowerPoint remember the last folder you saved to. So open one document, choose File > Save As, and pick Desktop as the folder. Save it. From then on, that app keeps offering the Desktop whenever you save a new file, because it defaults to the folder you used last. It feels automatic after that, and you only do it once.
Do this once in each app you use (for example Word and Excel separately), because each app remembers its own last folder.
