Processes in Microsoft 365 for setting up Office apps, redeeming product keys, and activating licenses.
Sign back in to the Microsoft 365 admin center using the new custom-domain address and your existing password, because changing the administrator’s username normally signs the account out.^1^
Check whether the change actually succeeded
- Open an InPrivate/Incognito browser window to avoid cached credentials.
- Open the Microsoft 365 admin center.
- Sign in as the new address, for example
[Email], using the same password previously used with[Email]. - Go to Users > Active users, select your account, and check Account > Manage username and email.
A closely matching case—where changing the only administrator from an onmicrosoft.com address caused an immediate logout—was resolved by signing in with the new address.^2^
The original onmicrosoft.com domain remains part of the tenant; it is not renamed or deleted. It does not need to remain your public-facing email address.
If the new address does not work
The correct supported path is:
Microsoft 365 admin center > Users > Active users > your account > Account > Manage username and email
Select the custom domain and choose Done. This requires at least the User Administrator role.^3^
Use the branch matching the exact error:
- “A parameter cannot be found that matches parameter name 'EmailAddresses'”
A newly added domain or tenant can take up to four hours to finish provisioning. Wait until four hours have elapsed from setup, then retry. If it persists, contact Microsoft 365 support and request a full synchronization.^3^ - “We’re sorry, the user couldn’t be edited. Review the user information and try again”
The signed-in account lacks the required administrator role. Have a Global Administrator or User Administrator perform the change or assign the appropriate role.^3^ - A different or generic error
Record the complete error text, timestamp, and any correlation/request ID, then open a support request from the Microsoft 365 admin center. Those details are needed to distinguish a failed save from a successful change followed by reauthentication.
Email licensing check
If the username changes successfully but the custom-domain mailbox cannot send or receive mail, verify that the account has a Microsoft 365 license containing Exchange Online. Microsoft documents that without an Exchange license, the custom domain cannot be used to send or receive email from the tenant.^1^
