    Dear @Clare Cockbill,

    I hope you’re having a good day

Since the domain has already been added and shows as healthy, the domain verification itself appears to be successful. The more interesting part of your description is that you can select the new domain and click Done, but an error occurs when saving and you are then signed out.

One possibility is that you are changing the username (User Principal Name / sign-in address) of the account you are currently signed in with. In some situations, Microsoft 365 may end the current session and require you to sign in again using the new email address after the change.

To help narrow this down, could you please clarify:

    • Are you changing the email address of your administrator account or another user account?
    • What is the exact error message displayed when you click Save?
    • After being signed out, have you tried signing back in using the new domain email address?
    • Does the new domain appear as Default in the Domains section of the Microsoft 365 Admin Center, or is it only listed as healthy?

A few things you could check:

    • Confirm that the user has the new domain listed as a valid sign-in option.
    • Verify that the new email address is not already assigned to another user, group, or alias.
    • If possible, try making the change to a test user account first to see whether the behavior is specific to the administrator account.
    • Capture a screenshot of the error message before the logout occurs, as that will usually provide the most useful clue.

If you can provide the exact error message or a screenshot of what happens after clicking Save, I should be able to give more targeted guidance.

    Warm regards,

Sign back in to the Microsoft 365 admin center using the new custom-domain address and your existing password, because changing the administrator’s username normally signs the account out.^1^

Check whether the change actually succeeded

    1. Open an InPrivate/Incognito browser window to avoid cached credentials.
    2. Open the Microsoft 365 admin center.
    3. Sign in as the new address, for example [Email], using the same password previously used with [Email].
    4. Go to Users > Active users, select your account, and check Account > Manage username and email.

A closely matching case—where changing the only administrator from an onmicrosoft.com address caused an immediate logout—was resolved by signing in with the new address.^2^

The original onmicrosoft.com domain remains part of the tenant; it is not renamed or deleted. It does not need to remain your public-facing email address.

If the new address does not work

    The correct supported path is:

Microsoft 365 admin center > Users > Active users > your account > Account > Manage username and email

Select the custom domain and choose Done. This requires at least the User Administrator role.^3^

Use the branch matching the exact error:

    • “A parameter cannot be found that matches parameter name 'EmailAddresses'”
A newly added domain or tenant can take up to four hours to finish provisioning. Wait until four hours have elapsed from setup, then retry. If it persists, contact Microsoft 365 support and request a full synchronization.^3^
    • “We’re sorry, the user couldn’t be edited. Review the user information and try again”
The signed-in account lacks the required administrator role. Have a Global Administrator or User Administrator perform the change or assign the appropriate role.^3^
    • A different or generic error
Record the complete error text, timestamp, and any correlation/request ID, then open a support request from the Microsoft 365 admin center. Those details are needed to distinguish a failed save from a successful change followed by reauthentication.

    Email licensing check

If the username changes successfully but the custom-domain mailbox cannot send or receive mail, verify that the account has a Microsoft 365 license containing Exchange Online. Microsoft documents that without an Exchange license, the custom domain cannot be used to send or receive email from the tenant.^1^
