Hello @Tchakounte Tchakounte, Hillary ,

Thank you for your question.

Azure Virtual Desktop App Attach is supported on Windows** Server 2022 and Windows Server 2025. Windows Server 2019 may still be used as an Azure Virtual Desktop session host in general, but it is not listed as a supported operating system for App **Attach.

There is no supported configuration change that enables App Attach on Windows Server 2019. The recommended resolution is to:

Deploy Windows Server 2022 or 2025 session hosts.

Join them to Microsoft Entra ID or Active Directory Domain Services.

Provide their computer accounts with read access to the regional SMB file share containing the application image.

Create the package under Azure** Virtual Desktop > App **Attach.

Assign the package to the host pool and required users or groups.

Test the application before decommissioning the Windows Server 2019 hosts.

For detailed prerequisites and configuration steps, please refer to:

Thanks,

Manasa.

Answer 1

App Attach in Azure Virtual Desktop is supported on Windows Server 2022 and Windows Server 2025. The prerequisites explicitly state that, as of April 14, 2026, Windows Server 2022 and 2025 are supported for App Attach.

Windows Server 2019 is listed as a supported Azure Virtual Desktop session host operating system in general, but the App Attach-specific documentation and release notes only call out support for Windows Server 2022 and 2025. Based on that, App Attach support is not documented for Windows Server 2019.

Welcome to Microsoft Q&A

Hello @Tchakounte Tchakounte, Hillary

According to the current Azure Virtual Desktop App Attach prerequisites, Windows Server 2022 and Windows Server 2025 are supported session host operating systems for App Attach. Microsoft specifically notes:

"As of April 14, 2026 Windows Server 2022 and 2025 are now supported."

While Windows Server 2019 remains a supported Azure Virtual Desktop session host OS in general, the current App Attach documentation only lists Windows Server 2022 and 2025 for App Attach support and does not mention Windows Server 2019. Based on the published documentation, Windows Server 2019 isn't currently documented as a supported operating system for App Attach.

Therefore, if you're planning a new App Attach deployment, I recommend using:

Windows Server 2022
Windows Server 2025

or a supported Windows client OS listed in the Azure Virtual Desktop documentation.
