Attempting to download the Free 365 web version but it keeps bouncing to CoPilot whenever I try to sign in. I do have an expired version of 365 still in the system. Why is this happening and how can it be fixed?

The free Microsoft 365 web apps do not need to be downloaded—sign in with a personal Microsoft account, open Apps, and launch Word, Excel, or PowerPoint in the browser.

Microsoft renamed the Microsoft 365 (Office) app to the Microsoft Copilot app, so the Copilot page is now the expected Microsoft 365 landing page rather than evidence that the expired subscription is redirecting you incorrectly. The change applies across the web, Windows, and mobile platforms, and the former Office/Microsoft 365 addresses redirect to the newer experience.^1^

Access the free web apps

  1. Open https://www.office.com in a browser.
  2. Select Sign in and use your personal Microsoft account.
  3. Check the account name shown in the page header.
  4. Select the App Launcher—the nine-dot icon—or Apps in the lower-left corner.
  5. Select Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or another available app.

Microsoft documents this same sign-in and App Launcher path for Office on the web.[^2^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Sign in to Microsoft 365")

Microsoft 365 Online is free with a Microsoft account, although some advanced capabilities are reserved for paid desktop or subscription versions.[^3^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Try or buy Microsoft 365 | Microsoft Support")

About the expired subscription

The expired subscription is not required to use the free browser apps. However:

  • Do not select Install apps if the goal is the free web version. That option concerns downloadable desktop applications and may require an active subscription, trial, or purchased Office license.
  • Files used with the web apps can be stored in OneDrive.
  • If the site selects an old work, school, or subscription account automatically, select the profile icon in the upper-right corner, sign out, and sign back in with the personal Microsoft account you want to use.
  • If account selection remains stuck, open a private/InPrivate browser window and sign in there. This avoids the existing browser session without altering the expired subscription or installed Office copy.

The expired desktop installation can remain on the computer; it is separate from launching the free applications in a browser.
