Will Microsoft 365 users who accepted family plan invite need to do anything once current personal subscription ends?

I have paid for a Microsoft Office subscription for 3 different laptops. Two of the plans/devices are personal plans. The last device I purchased, I purchased the Microsoft 365 Family subscription. I attempted to cancel the 2 others plans, so that we could all use the Family plan. The "cancel" appears to simply be a "turning off" of the auto-renew function. For the 3rd device/Family subscription, that user sent the two of us with "cancelled" subscriptions an invite to share the Family plan. We accepted the invite, but the wording of the acceptance message indicated that we are still on our current subscription until its end date is reached (when it won't be auto-renewed). When that end date is reached, will the two of us very simply roll into the Family plan since we have "accepted" the invite? Or will we have to attempt all of this again at the point that our current subscriptions end?

    Hi Shannon Smith,

One detail worth checking is whether both accounts are only listed as members of the Microsoft family group or are also shown as receiving the shared Microsoft 365 subscription. Joining the family group by itself does not always confirm that the subscription benefits have been assigned.

The two Microsoft 365 Personal subscriptions can remain active until their displayed expiration dates after recurring billing has been turned off. Once they expire, sign in to Services & subscriptions with each invited account and check whether Microsoft 365 Family appears as a shared subscription.

The Family subscription owner should also open the subscription-sharing page and confirm that both accounts are shown as actively sharing, rather than waiting for an invitation to be completed. If the Family benefits do not appear after the Personal subscriptions expire, the owner can stop sharing with the affected account and send a new invitation.

There should be no need to reinstall Office. Each person should continue signing in to Office with the same Microsoft account that accepted the Family invitation, and personal files and OneDrive content will remain separate. Thank you so much for your understanding.

You normally will not need another invitation: leave recurring billing off, allow each Microsoft 365 Personal subscription to reach its paid expiration date, and the already-accepted Microsoft 365 Family benefit should then take over.

Turning off recurring billing does not immediately cancel the remaining paid period. This is why the accounts and Office applications continue to show Microsoft 365 Personal until its expiration date. A closely matched case confirms that an accepted Family invitation should apply after Personal expires; if Office does not recognize it automatically, refresh the app’s license rather than repeating the entire process.^1^

    What to do now

For each person moving from Personal to Family:

    1. Leave recurring billing turned off on the Personal subscription.
    2. Remain in the Family owner’s Microsoft family group. Accepting the sharing invitation adds the invitee to that group, and sharing continues only while the invitee remains in it.[^2^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Share your Microsoft 365 subscription | Microsoft Support")
    3. Continue using Microsoft 365 normally until the Personal plan’s displayed expiration date.
    4. After that date, sign in to the Microsoft account’s Services & subscriptions page using the same Microsoft account that accepted the invitation. The Family benefit should appear as a shared subscription. A matching transition case indicates that the Family subscription may not appear until the existing Personal period has ended.^3^

Your existing OneDrive files stay associated with each person’s Microsoft account; joining a shared subscription does not combine family members’ files or accounts. Microsoft’s invitation guidance states that accepting the invitation grants access to the shared subscription benefits while each person’s files and folders remain private.[^4^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Someone invited you to share their Microsoft 365 subscription")

    If Office still says expired

    On the affected laptop:

    1. Open Word or Excel.
    2. Select File → Account.
    3. Select Update License.
    4. Sign in with the exact Microsoft account that accepted the Family invitation.
    5. Close and reopen all Office applications.

This refreshes the installed applications’ licensing information; reinstalling Office is not normally necessary when switching between Microsoft 365 home subscriptions.[^5^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Switch between Microsoft 365 subscriptions")

If the Family benefit still does not appear after the Personal subscription has expired:

    1. Have the Family owner open the Microsoft 365 sharing page and check that each person is shown as sharing—not as a pending invitation.
    2. Confirm that each person remains in the owner’s family group.
    3. If the sharing entry is missing or stuck, the owner can remove that share and send a new invitation; accept it using the same Microsoft account used in Office.

Therefore, no action should be required at expiration beyond checking the subscription status and, if necessary, selecting Update License in an Office application.
