Sending, receiving, and organizing email in Outlook on the web for business
Hi Pauline,
Based on what you shared, since you can send email from the business account but replies are rejected with "554 5.7.1: Relay access denied", this is likely an inbound mail-routing or domain configuration issue. This error indicates that the server receiving mail for the domain does not recognize the recipient or is not configured to accept mail for that domain. The most common causes are:
- The domain’s MX record points to the wrong or former email provider
- The custom domain isn't fully configured in Microsoft 365
- An inbound connector or mail-flow configuration is rejecting external delivery
- DNS was changed recently, and the updated record has not propagated everywhere
In this situation, to help identify where the message is being rejected, can you please share:
- Is your business email hosted through Microsoft 365, or another provider?
- Did you recently create the mailbox or connect a custom business domain?
- Does this happen when sending to the business address from more than one external email account?
- Please share the complete bounce-back message, especially (remove any personal information before sharing):
- The complete error under Diagnostic information for administrators
- The generating server
- The receiving server shown after Remote server returned
- If you're an administrator, please also check whether the affected account has an active license that includes Exchange Online and whether the domain shows as healthy under Microsoft 365 admin center > Settings > Domains.
I greatly appreciate your cooperation and understanding. Hope to hear from you soon.
