A Microsoft offering that enables tracking of cloud usage and expenditures for Azure and other cloud providers.
To cancel Azure subscriptions in the Azure portal:
- Back up any data that must be kept.
- Stop running services from All resources to avoid leaving workloads active.
- In the Azure portal, go to Cost Management + Billing.
- In the left menu, select Subscriptions or Azure subscriptions.
- Select a subscription.
- At the top of the page, select Cancel.
- On the cancellation page:
- Select a reason for cancellation.
- If a support plan is shown and no other subscriptions use it, select Turn off auto-renew.
- If resources are still running, select Turn off resources. This is destructive, so ensure required data is already backed up.
- Select Cancel subscription.
- Repeat the same steps for each subscription that must be canceled.
Important details:
- A subscription owner must have the Subscription Owner role to cancel or later delete a subscription.
- After cancellation, the Delete option is not available immediately. It becomes available after 3 days for customer-led subscriptions or 7 days for field and partner channel subscriptions.
- To manually delete a canceled subscription, all resources must be removed first.
- If deletion is blocked even after resources were removed, check for hidden resources: go to Subscriptions > select the subscription > Resources > Manage view > Show hidden types, then delete those resources.
- After resource deletion, it can take about 10 minutes for the deletion status to update.
- Canceled subscriptions are automatically deleted after 90 days.
- If the goal is only to stop charges, removing all resources can also prevent unwanted charges instead of canceling the subscription.
