Processes in Microsoft 365 for setting up Office apps, redeeming product keys, and activating licenses.
The Microsoft 365 Family subscription owner should share the subscription with your husband’s existing Microsoft account, after which he must accept the invitation with that same account and refresh the Office license on his Windows PC.
Complete or verify the Family sharing
Since his password has already been reset and his Personal subscription has lapsed, do not create another Microsoft account or renew the old subscription.
- The Family subscription owner signs in to the Microsoft 365 sharing page using the account that purchased Microsoft 365 Family.
- Select Share.
- Choose Email invite, enter the email address for your husband’s existing Microsoft account, and select Invite. Alternatively, choose Create link and send him that link.
- Your husband opens the invitation, signs in with that same existing Microsoft account, selects Get started, and then Join now.
- The invitation must be accepted within 48 hours. If the dashboard shows Pending invite, select your husband’s name and Resend invite.[^1^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Share your Microsoft 365 subscription | Microsoft Support")
Using his existing account keeps his account and files separate from yours; the invitation grants that account access to the shared desktop applications and OneDrive benefits.[^2^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Someone invited you to share their Microsoft 365 subscription")
If Share or Start sharing is absent, confirm that the signed-in account is the owner of an active Microsoft 365 Family subscription and that a sharing place remains. Only the subscription owner can share, with up to five other people.[^3^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Troubleshoot sharing a Microsoft 365 subscription")
If the invitation still cannot be accepted
Apply the branch matching the displayed message:
- “Already in a family group”: Your husband must leave that other Microsoft family group first, then accept your invitation again.[^1^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Share your Microsoft 365 subscription | Microsoft Support")
- Invitation not received: Check his junk folder for a message containing “Microsoft 365” in the subject. On the sharing dashboard, verify that the invitation was addressed to the Microsoft account he recovered, then resend it.[^3^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Troubleshoot sharing a Microsoft 365 subscription")
- He already receives benefits from another shared subscription: Microsoft does not allow another Family subscription to be shared with that account while it already has those shared benefits.[^3^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Troubleshoot sharing a Microsoft 365 subscription")
Restore editing on his Windows PC
After his account shows the shared subscription:
- Open Word or Excel.
- Go to File → Account.
- Confirm the account shown is the same Microsoft account that accepted your invitation.
- Under Product Information, select Update License.
- Complete the prompts, close every Office application, and reopen Word or Excel.
The license normally refreshes automatically, but a new entitlement can take up to 72 hours to appear; Update License requests it immediately.^4^
If Office still displays Unlicensed Product:
- Check whether the Family subscription appears under his account at Services & subscriptions.
- If it appears as active, ensure Office is signed in with that account.
- In Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features, search for “Office.” Only if multiple Office installations appear, uninstall the version no longer used, restart Windows, and try activation again.^5^
For urgent editing while activation is being completed, he can use the free browser-based Office apps at Office.com. An expired desktop license permits viewing and printing but not desktop editing; Office for the web provides a temporary editing route.[^6^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "A subscription notice appears when I open a Microsoft 365 application | Microsoft Support")
Escalate the existing support case
Microsoft Learn Q&A cannot inspect or update support case 7111061824. If the promised callback has not occurred, open Microsoft Support, choose Get help, describe the Microsoft 365 Family sharing/activation problem, then select Contact Support and provide the existing case number so it can be associated with the prior work.^7^
