Try these steps in order:
- Start the reset from Windows settings:
- Open Settings > System > Recovery.
- Next to Reset this PC, select Reset PC.
- Choose Keep my files or Remove everything.
- Then choose Cloud download or Local reinstall.
- Follow the on-screen steps.
- If reset fails from Windows, try it from Windows Recovery Environment:
- From the sign-in screen, hold Shift and select Power > Restart.
- Go to Troubleshoot > Reset this PC.
- Choose the reset option again.
- If a blue screen or black screen appears during reset, do not turn off or manually restart the laptop. The reset process can leave the screen black for a long time, and restarting it manually can cause the reset to fail.
- If the device asks for a recovery key during reset, the drive is encrypted with BitLocker. The BitLocker recovery key is required to continue.
- If the reset keeps failing, a clean reinstall of Windows may be needed. This removes apps, settings, and depending on the option used, personal files.
If the laptop is a Surface device, Microsoft recommends Cloud download when available.
