Purchase and billing

My wife Nancy Eskridge (Mac) had something temporary or limited (for a long time though) and tried to buy (or maybe was told by you to buy) a regular 365 package. But you guys were haywire and could not communicate. This was a couple of months ago. According to Gemini probably. We also wonder if we both need to pay the annual charge or is there a family plan. (I'm on a PC and have had 365 for many years.) Meanwhile we had our CC hacked and I think we just approved a new charge on her card, no guarantee. Just to top things off I guess my deal renews ever November 1 and you didn't succeed with the old card. For some reason my new card hasn't arrived yet. Yes they're the same number but the whole thing has been such a mess that I am reluctant to assume too much here. Please get back to me and we'd like you to get what we owe you and not have any interruptions. Nor pay twice or three times by mistake. Thanks.

Check both Microsoft accounts’ subscriptions and order histories before making another purchase, then resolve any genuine past-due charge and upgrade only the account that will own the shared Microsoft 365 Family subscription.

    1. Check both accounts before paying again

Microsoft cannot inspect or modify either account through this public forum. Each of you should separately sign in to the Microsoft account dashboard—the account used in Word, Excel, or the original purchase—and review:

    1. Services & subscriptions: record the plan name, status, renewal date, recurring-billing status, and whether Pay now appears.
    2. Payment & billing → Order history: look for recent Microsoft 365 purchases or renewals.
    3. Compare those entries with the credit-card statement.

The dashboard is where each Microsoft account’s subscriptions, orders, and payment methods are managed.^1^

Do not buy another subscription until this establishes whether there are:

    • Two active subscriptions under separate accounts.
    • One past-due renewal and one newer purchase.
    • A charge that does not appear in either account’s order history.

A previously declined payment may be retried later, so two nearby card entries do not necessarily mean the same bill was paid twice. If charges appear on the card but not in one account’s order history, go to that account’s Payment options and select Investigate; the card may be associated with another Microsoft account.^2^

    2. Resolve the existing subscription’s payment

On the account containing the long-standing subscription:

    1. Open Services & subscriptions.
    2. If its status is Past due, select Pay now.
    3. Add or update a valid payment method.
    4. Review the amount and subscription carefully, then select Next to pay.

Microsoft documents Pay now as the correct action for a past-due subscription.[^3^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Pay for a past-due Microsoft subscription | Microsoft Support")

If it is not past due but the stored card must be replaced:

    1. Select Manage beside the subscription.
    2. Select Change how you pay.
    3. Choose Add a new way to pay, then enter the replacement card when available.

That option may not appear when recurring billing is off. If the subscription was purchased through Apple or another retailer, its billing must instead be managed through that provider.[^4^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Change your Microsoft subscription payment method and options | Microsoft Support")

Because the card was compromised, continue working with the card issuer as well; Microsoft recommends notifying the bank or payment provider when payment information may have been acquired.^5^

    3. Consolidate under one Family subscription

You do not both need separate annual subscriptions if you use Microsoft 365 Family. It can be used by up to six people, with each person retaining a separate Microsoft account.^6^

After the billing review shows which account should own the plan:

    1. Sign in with that same owner account.
    2. Purchase Microsoft 365 Family while signed in to it—do not purchase Family under the other spouse’s account if the goal is to consolidate around the existing subscription.
    3. Microsoft converts the remaining time on an existing Personal subscription and adds it to Family. The conversion rate applies, so the added Family time may be shorter than the Personal time remaining.[^7^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Switch between Microsoft 365 subscriptions")
    4. Open the Family subscription’s sharing page and select Share.
    5. Send an email invitation or sharing link to the other spouse.
    6. The invitee signs in with their own Microsoft account and selects Join now. Invitations must be accepted within 48 hours.

Family sharing is unavailable with Microsoft 365 Personal or Basic. If the invitee already belongs to another Microsoft family group, they must leave it before accepting the new invitation.[^8^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Share your Microsoft 365 subscription | Microsoft Support")

    If the records remain unclear

Do not cancel, repurchase, or pay an uncertain charge. Contact Microsoft billing support and provide the dates, amounts, last four card digits, and order numbers—never a full card number. Microsoft Support can route account and billing questions to chat or the appropriate support channel.^9^
