The Live Captions window may be open outside the visible desktop, so maximize its window directly from Task Manager before repairing Windows.

    Restore the missing window

Since both the shortcut and manual launch already fail to display it:

    1. Turn Live captions on so its process is running.
    2. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
    3. On the Processes page, locate Live Captions.
    4. Expand the process if it has an arrow beside it.
    5. Right-click the lower Live Captions entry and select Maximize.

This recovered the invisible/off-screen window in a matching Windows 11 case, particularly after monitor or docking-layout changes.^1^

If multiple monitors are connected, temporarily disconnect the additional display after maximizing the window. Once visible, open the Live Captions Settings → Position menu and select Above screen, Below screen, or Overlaid on screen. Windows supports those three placement options.^2^

Check the Windows version and initial setup

Live Captions requires Windows 11 version 22H2 or later.^3^

    1. Press Windows + R, enter winver, and press Enter.
    2. If the version is earlier than 22H2, install a supported Windows 11 feature update.
    3. If Live Captions has never completed first-time setup, launch it from: Start → All apps → Accessibility → Live captions.
    4. Accept the on-device voice-processing prompt and allow Windows to download the required language files.

If Windows explicitly reports “We can’t download the required language files right now”, test whether Microsoft Store can download an app. If Store access is blocked on a managed computer, contact the administrator; otherwise, use Microsoft’s matching speech package for the PC’s display language and system type.^3^

Do not manually reinstall a speech package unless that download error appears—the documented package procedure is specifically for setup/download failures.

Repair Windows components if no process or window appears

If Live Captions does not appear in Task Manager when launched, repair the Windows component store and protected system files:

    1. Search for Command Prompt.
    2. Select Run as administrator.
    3. Run these commands in order:
    DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
    sfc /scannow

    1. Wait until SFC reaches 100%, restart Windows, and launch Live Captions again from Start → All apps → Accessibility → Live captions.

DISM supplies files needed for repair, while SFC scans and replaces damaged protected Windows files.^4^

If it still produces neither a window nor a process, submit a report through Feedback Hub, including the Windows version from winver, whether Live Captions appears in Task Manager, and whether multiple displays or a docking station are involved. Microsoft specifically requests Feedback Hub reports when installation succeeds but the feature still does not work.^3^

Hello, I'm Quinn and here to help!

The AI answer above is good enough. You can also try for Live Captions to pop up.

    1. Go to Settings (Win + I) > Accessibility > Captions.
    2. Toggle Live Captions on.

Also, instead of Ctrl + Win + L, try pressing Win + Ctrl + L to enable Live Captions.
