Use Microsoft’s generic Windows 10 Pro key offline to trigger the edition change, then reconnect and enter the OEM Pro key to activate it.
Change Windows 10 Home to Pro
Back up important files first. The Home-to-Pro path is supported and normally preserves files, settings, and applications, but it requires a restart.^1^
- Disconnect the PC from the internet:
- Turn off Wi-Fi, or
- Unplug the Ethernet cable.
- Open Start → Settings → Update & Security → Activation.
- Select Change product key.
- Enter this generic Windows 10 Pro edition-change key:
VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T - Complete the prompts and restart the PC. This generic key changes the installed edition; it does not provide a Windows license.
- After restarting, check Settings → System → About. Under Windows specifications, the edition should say Windows 10 Pro.
- Reconnect to the internet, return to Settings → Update & Security → Activation → Change product key, and enter the OEM Windows 10 Pro key supplied by the manufacturer.
This offline generic-key sequence is an accepted Microsoft Q&A workaround for a closely matching Windows 10 Home-to-Pro key failure.^2^ Microsoft also documents manual product-key entry as the supported Home-to-Pro edition-change method.^3^
Do not disable antivirus unless it is specifically blocking the change. If temporarily disabling third-party antivirus becomes necessary, re-enable it and verify protection is active before reconnecting to the internet.
If the OEM key still does not activate Pro
Contact the PC manufacturer and ask them to verify that:
- The key is specifically for Windows 10 Pro, not Home or another edition.
- It is assigned to this particular PC.
- It has not already been used on another device.
OEM Windows activation is associated with the computer’s firmware/BIOS and is intended for the system on which Windows was supplied.^4^ If the manufacturer supplied the key for another PC, it generally cannot serve as the Pro license for this one; obtain a valid Pro upgrade from the manufacturer or Microsoft Store instead.
If the manufacturer confirms that it is a Windows 10 Pro key assigned to this PC but activation still fails, contact the manufacturer or Microsoft activation support and provide the exact message plus any error code shown. An edition-mismatch error requires a key matching the installed Windows edition.^5^
