For a Surface device that will not boot from recovery media after a motherboard and SSD replacement, use a Surface-specific USB recovery drive for the exact model and boot it with the Surface USB startup method.
- Recreate the recovery USB using the Surface recovery image for the specific Surface model.
- A Surface recovery image is required for Surface devices.
- The recovery image download requires the Surface serial number and a USB drive with at least 32 GB available space.
- If multiple recovery images are offered, use the most recent version.
- Start the Surface from the USB recovery drive using the Surface boot sequence:
- Insert the USB recovery drive into the Surface USB port.
- Press and hold Volume Down.
- While holding Volume Down, press and release Power.
- When the Surface logo appears, release Volume Down.
- Check whether Windows starts.
- If Windows starts, install the latest Surface and Windows updates.
- If Windows does not start, the documented next step is Device Service and Repair.
- Because the SSD was replaced, account for post-repair requirements:
- Replacement SSDs ship without a Windows image.
- If the SSD was swapped from another device, the BitLocker Recovery Key is required to unlock it and allow Windows to boot.
- If the motherboard was replaced, a changed internal serial number is expected.
- The internal system serial number can differ after motherboard replacement.
- It is shown in Settings > About and in the Surface app > Device Information.
- The etched serial number on the outside of the device remains the one to use for warranty service and support.
