I am unable to login to MS Defender. I've tried with both of my emails, and I'm unable to find any information on how to resolve this. How do I resolve that? #defender

First identify whether you opened Windows Security or the separate Microsoft Defender app, because only the Defender app requires a personal Microsoft-account sign-in.

1. Identify the app

  • Windows Security is built into Windows 10 and 11 and contains Microsoft Defender Antivirus. It does not require signing in to provide the built-in antivirus protection.
  • Microsoft Defender is a separate app for Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS that uses a personal Microsoft account and provides a cross-device security dashboard.^1^

Open Start and check the app name at the top of the window. If it says Windows Security, use that app directly rather than looking for a Defender login.

2. If it is the Microsoft Defender app

Sign in with a personal Microsoft account. If you subscribe to Microsoft 365 Personal or Family, first use the personal account associated with that subscription. Microsoft also documents installation and personal-account sign-in on Windows when there is no active subscription.^2^

Since both email addresses produce the same generic screen, repair the app rather than repeatedly trying them:

  1. Install pending Windows updates:
    • Windows 11: Start → Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates.
    • Install available updates and restart.
  2. Update Defender:
    • Open Microsoft Store → Library → Get updates.
  3. If available, repair it:
    • Start → Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
    • Find Microsoft Defender → More (…) → Advanced options → Repair.
  4. Open Defender and try the appropriate personal account again.
  5. If Repair does not work and the option is available, return to the same page and select Reset.^3^

Not every app exposes Advanced options, Repair, or Reset.

3. If repair or reset does not resolve it

Reinstall the Defender app:

  1. Open Start, right-click Microsoft Defender, and select Uninstall.
  2. Open https://aka.ms/WindowsDefender.
  3. Select Install in Microsoft Store.
  4. Launch Defender and sign in with the personal Microsoft account again.^2^

Reinstallation is also an official Microsoft Store troubleshooting step when an app continues to malfunction.^4^

4. Report the generic login failure

If the reinstalled app still only displays Got it or Send feedback:

  • Select Send feedback to report the issue.
  • On Windows, Defender’s feedback menu can also be opened using the Help button near the upper-right corner, followed by Help and feedback.^1^
  • Open the Windows Get Help app, enter Microsoft Defender personal account sign-in failure, run any offered diagnostic, and then select Contact Support if it remains unresolved. Available contact methods can include browser chat or a callback, depending on the scenario, subscription, and operating hours.^5^

Include a screenshot and note that two personal Microsoft accounts produce the same Got it / Send feedback screen.
