Can Xbox profile and purchases be separated from a parent’s Microsoft account?

My Xbox profile was created years ago using my mother’s personal Microsoft account, which she still uses for her Hotmail email. We both want her to keep her existing Hotmail address and Microsoft account, while I move the Xbox profile, gamertag, purchases, achievements and saves to my own Microsoft account. Changing the primary email alias did not separate the accounts.

I understand Microsoft’s public guidance says personal accounts cannot be split and Xbox purchases or progress cannot normally be transferred. Are there any current specialist-reviewed exceptions or migration processes for this situation, with the account owner’s consent, that leave the original Hotmail account fully active? If so, how can we request a review? Please do not suggest removing the Hotmail alias, as she needs to keep it.

    Hello Jonathan Ridley,

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum.

As far as I know, Microsoft doesn't have an y method to switch entitlement or migrate account per user requests. Even though I do believe they can do so, it is likely not for individual user request and rather for emergency like account recovery. The workaround of moving the mailbox won't work either since Hotmail domain is no longer offered.

No. There is no supported exception or specialist-reviewed migration process in the provided guidance that can separate an Xbox profile, gamertag, purchases, achievements, saves, or subscriptions from a parent’s personal Microsoft account and move them to another Microsoft account while leaving the original Hotmail-based Microsoft account active.

    What is supported:

    1. Microsoft personal accounts cannot be linked, merged, or combined.
    2. Xbox profiles, purchases, game progress, gamertags, balances, and account history stay tied to the Microsoft account where they were originally created.
    3. Changing or adding aliases only changes the sign-in address for the same Microsoft account. It does not split Xbox data away from that account.
    4. A Hotmail address can remain on the existing Microsoft account, but keeping that account active also means the Xbox content remains attached to it.

For this scenario, the available options in the provided guidance are:

    • Keep using the existing Microsoft account for the Xbox profile and content.
    • Add a different alias to that same Microsoft account and make it primary if a different sign-in name is needed, while understanding this does not separate the Xbox profile.
    • Start fresh with a different Microsoft account for new Xbox activity.

The provided support guidance does not describe any escalation path, consent-based review, or backend transfer request that can override these limits for personal Microsoft accounts and Xbox content.
