HERE"S WHAT CAME IN ON REJECTED MESSAGES (my own message follows the cut and pasted rejected messages)

--Activity: Potentially compromised user account Details: User [Moderator note: Personally Identifiable Information removed] has been restricted from sending messages outside the organization due to potential compromised activity. See details in the Microsoft 365 security center.

MESSAGE: Delivery has failed to these recipients or groups:

[[Moderator note: Personally Identifiable Information removed]] This message couldn't be delivered because the sending email address was not recognized as a valid sender. The most common reason for this error is that the email address is, or was, suspected of sending spam. Contact the organization's email admin for help and give them this error message.

Subject: Re: High-severity alert: User restricted from sending email
  1. I'm a Microsoft Business Standard Customer in a 1-person LLC using a desktop computer running Windows11. I'm the one with administrator privileges, since I'm the sole purchaser and user.
  2. I have never knowingly sent bulk email in 30 years of using my own computer.
  3. The suspected security issue happened while using NordVPN, so it's not likely that my outgoing mail has been taken over by some kind of security risk.
  4. I'm not a software support tech. The support instructions given so far are either too vague, or not explained or too complicated for me to use. [What is Microsoft Defender XDR and why might I need it?]
  5. I'd be grateful for suggestions on how to solve the bounced email issue or, better yet, be able to talk to someone with the ability to determine a) whether my computer is compromised and b) how to set my software so that it can't send spam.

Thanks in advance for helping me out.

Hi Charles Chambers

Since the account is a Microsoft 365 Business Standard tenant and you are the sole user and Global Administrator, the alert indicates that Microsoft detected activity that resembled spam or account compromise and automatically placed the mailbox in a restricted state. This restriction can occur even if the account owner did not intentionally send bulk email.

As the tenant administrator, you may want to review the following:

  • Check whether there are any active alerts, risky sign-ins, or suspicious activities associated with the account in the Microsoft 365 Defender/Security portal.
  • Verify that no unexpected inbox rules, forwarding rules, delegates, or connected applications have been configured on the mailbox.
  • Review recent sign-in activity and confirm that all sign-ins originated from expected locations and devices.
  • Run a full malware and antivirus scan on the affected device and ensure Windows and Office are fully up to date.
  • Reset the account password and enable or review Multifactor Authentication (MFA) settings if they are not already in place.

If the account has already been restricted from sending outbound email, and especially if the guidance provided so far is difficult to follow, I would recommend opening a support request directly through the Microsoft 365 Admin Center. Since this is a Business subscription, Microsoft Support can review the restricted-user status, determine what triggered the restriction, and advise whether additional remediation steps are required before sending privileges can be restored.

Also, the 550 5.1.8 Access denied, bad outbound sender AS(42004) error is consistent with a mailbox that has been blocked from outbound sending due to Microsoft's anti-spam or compromise detection systems, so resolving the underlying restriction is typically the primary step before mail flow can resume.

I hope this information helps.

Big news. instead of continuing to wrestle with the Microsoft 365 Admin Center portaI, I started searching on the whole web for help for small Microsoft 365 Business Standard customers.

I found the following video on How to get help or support with Microsoft 365 for business via the first alternative described in the video -- Use Admin Center Eventually I was able to fill out an online help request form that asked for direct help from a real person after first trying to determine the problem. (I couldn't. Too complicated.)

Once I sent the help request, a tech support person called in about 15 minutes. It turned out that two guys appearing originally to be from Australia had opened two addresses within my "tenant" space. THAT was what caused the security breach that, in turn, cause my outgoing mail to lock down. Once we deleted the two addresses and reset my password, the tech restored my ability to send email from by Biz Standard email. If you click on the link, you can go to the video that led to my getting human help. https://www.bing.com/videos/riverview/relatedvideo?q=microsoft+365+support+for+very+small+business+users.&mid=B4C4421D05F3DD350C47B4C4421D05F3DD350C47&churl=https%3a%2f%2fwww.youtube.com%2fchannel%2fUCc3pNIRzIZ8ynI38GO6H01Q&FORM=VIRE
