Wife is ADMINISTRATOR of our Windows / Microsoft accounts.

I bought an HP PC and would like my own account. Her credentials keep popping up with her 1 license for Office 360.

How do I establish myself as an account holder of the product?

Create your own Windows user linked to your own Microsoft account, sign into that Windows profile, and then activate the PC’s included Microsoft 365 offer with your account—not your wife’s.

    1. Create your own account on the HP PC

While signed into your wife’s administrator account:

    1. Open Start → Settings → Accounts → Other users.
    2. Under Add other user, select Add account.
    3. Enter the email address for your Microsoft account.
      • If you do not have one, select I don’t have this person’s sign-in information, then create a new Microsoft account.
    4. Complete the prompts.
    5. Open Start, select your wife’s user picture, and switch to your newly created account.

Windows supports separate user accounts so each person has their own files, settings, and Microsoft sign-ins. Your account can remain a standard user; being the Windows administrator does not determine who owns the Microsoft 365 subscription.^1^

    2. Claim the included Microsoft 365 offer

    From your new Windows profile:

    1. Open Word, Excel, or another preinstalled Office app.
    2. At the activation screen, select the option to activate or claim the included one-year offer.
    3. If your wife’s account is displayed, do not continue with it. Choose Use another account or sign out, then enter your Microsoft-account credentials.
    4. Follow the activation prompts.

For a one-year offer digitally included with a new PC, the product key is normally transmitted to the device; no printed key is required. The subscription is added to the Microsoft account used during activation, and that account then becomes the account used to manage or reinstall it.^2^

After activation, check the Services & subscriptions page while signed in with your account. The Microsoft 365 subscription should be listed there. The account associated with Office identifies who owns the license and is used for later installation and management.[^3^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "About accounts in Office | Microsoft Support")

If HP supplied a 25-character product key

If the packaging, receipt, or email contains a 25-character key:

    1. Go to https://www.office.com/setup.
    2. Sign in with your Microsoft account.
    3. Enter the key without hyphens if prompted.
    4. Complete redemption, then install or open Office.

Redemption permanently associates the key with the Microsoft account used at that stage.^4^

If your wife’s account already claimed the offer

First check whether the subscription appears under your wife’s Services & subscriptions page. If it does, simply signing her out or making you a Windows administrator will not transfer ownership.

Because the product has already been associated with another account, contact Microsoft Support and retain the HP receipt or other proof of purchase. Microsoft specifically directs customers to support when someone else installed Office and associated their own account with the product.[^5^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Why do I need an account to sign in to Microsoft 365 or Office? | Microsoft Support")
