Perform a clean installation from a bootable Windows USB to erase the previous owner’s files, accounts, apps, and settings without attempting to bypass their password.
Warning: This permanently deletes everything on the laptop. First ensure the storage-unit sale legally transferred the computer to you and that it does not need to be returned.
1. Create the Windows installation USB
On another working Windows PC:
- Insert a blank USB flash drive with at least 8 GB. Its existing contents will be erased.
- Open Microsoft’s Download Windows 10 page.
- Under Create Windows 10 Installation Media, select Download Now.
- Run
MediaCreationTool.exe. - Select Create installation media for another PC, choose the USB drive, and let the tool finish. ^1^
2. Start the Dell from the USB
- Shut down the Dell and connect the USB.
- Turn it on and open its one-time boot menu.
- Select the USB device in UEFI mode.
The exact boot-menu key varies by Dell model, so consult the model’s Dell documentation if the menu does not appear. If a BIOS/firmware password prevents USB booting, do not try to circumvent it; contact Dell and provide proof of ownership.
3. Erase the drive and reinstall Windows
In Windows Setup:
- Select the language and keyboard options.
- Choose the option to install Windows.
- If asked for a product key, select I don’t have a product key. Many modern computers have a key stored in firmware, which Setup applies automatically when the installed Windows edition matches it. ^1^
- If prompted to choose an edition, select the edition previously licensed on the laptop—typically Home or Pro. The edition must match the digital licence.
- At the drive-selection screen, delete every partition on Disk 0 until only Disk 0 Unallocated Space remains.
- Do not delete anything on Disk 1 or another disk if multiple physical drives are listed.
- Select Disk 0 Unallocated Space, then select Next/Install.
- After several restarts, complete setup with your own account and password.
Microsoft documents that a clean installation removes personal files, apps, manufacturer customizations, and settings. Windows normally activates after the computer connects to the internet, provided the correct licensed edition was installed. ^2^
Windows 10 support status
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so it no longer receives free security fixes. If this Dell meets Windows 11 requirements, install Windows 11 instead; otherwise, continuing with Windows 10 carries an increasing security risk. ^1^
