On 27-28 October 2026 My Microsoft Photos app stopped working properly. I uninstalled and was not able to reinstall the app again. Below is my system information.

Windows 11 Pro 23H2, build 22631.6199

Photos package: 2608.1401.18.0

Installation error: 0x80073CF6

Underlying error: 0x80004001 — Not implemented

Failing extension: windows.fileTypeAssociation.progIdGeneration

Photos worked until approximately 26–27 October 2026.

Store reset, DISM/SFC, removal, restart and WinGet installation

have not resolved it. Other Store apps update successfully.

Windows for home | Other | Music, photos, and video

Hi, I’m experiencing the same issue. My .jpeg files wouldn’t open and displayed an error. I selected the “Repair” and then “Reset” options for the Microsoft Photos app, but the app was removed. When I tried to reinstall it from the Microsoft Store, I got an error as well.

Has anyone been able to resolve this issue at this point, or do we have to wait for Microsoft to release an update? Since Microsoft Photos isn't working, I'm temporarily using Windows Photo Viewer.
