Sharing an Excel/Word file as Email attachment directly from the desktop App in new Outlook doesn't send the mail

Hello,

multiple of my users have raised an issue they seem to be facing, where when trying to share a Word/PPT/Excel file as an Email Attachment from the respective desktop App via the new Outlook app, which results in the email not being sent.
Steps in order to reproduce are as follows:

  1. In Word/PPT/Excel click on "File" > "Share" > "Email" > "Send as Attachment"
  2. A new email window in new Outlook pops open with the file being shown as attached. The user then populates the recipient and subject lines and hits on send.

The supposedly sent Email is nowhere to be found. It does not get delivered to the recipient and it is not to be found in the "Sent Items" folder of the sender.

The issue cannot be reproduced in classic Outlook.

A workaround I've found so far is to begin the process from new Outlook by starting a new Email and then attaching the file.

Any suggestions or solutions are welcome.

Thanks in advance,

In Word/PPT/Excel click on "File" > "Share" > "Email" > "Send as Attachment"

This is a known limitation of New Outlook for Windows, not a bug. Same problem if trying to use the Windows Explorer "Share" option.

This feature is on the Microsoft Roadmap. But I have not seen anything indicating an actual release date.

    Hi Dayana,

I have seen this behaviour. The File > Share > Email > Send as Attachment path hands the message to the default mail app through MAPI, and new Outlook handles that handoff less reliably than classic Outlook. That is why the message can vanish without reaching Sent Items or the recipient.

A few things I would check on an affected PC:

    1. In new Outlook, open the Drafts folder and the Outbox. Messages sent this way sometimes get saved as drafts instead of being sent.
    2. Confirm new Outlook is set as the default mail app: Windows Settings > Apps > Default apps, and set new Outlook as the default for MAILTO and email.
    3. Update both new Outlook and the Office apps to the latest builds, then test again.

If the problem persists, keep using your workaround of starting a new message in new Outlook and attaching the file there. That path is the reliable one.

    Thanks!

    Hello @Hristova, Dayana

*Since this is a user-to-user community forum, I can only provide guidance and troubleshooting suggestions based on my experience as a user and the information you have shared. *

Based on the information you provided, I tried to reproduce the issue by following the same steps you described and sending an email with a Word document attached.
    User's image

Unfortunately, I was able to reproduce the same behavior. The email was not received by the recipient, and I could not find it in the Sent Items folder or elsewhere in the mailbox.

Therefore, I would recommend contacting Microsoft Support for further investigation. The support team can work with you to collect the necessary diagnostic information and investigate the issue further. You can follow the guidance here: Contact support and provide feedback in new Outlook for Windows. Additionally, you can also contact your IT administrator and ask them to raise a support ticket through the Microsoft 365 admin center on your behalf by following Get support - Microsoft 365 admin | Microsoft Learn.

In the meantime, please continue using the available workaround to send the attachment while the issue is being investigated.

I hope this information is helpful. If you have any further concern please feel free to share with me any time.
