Sending, receiving, and organizing email in Outlook on the web for business
Hello Karin Olinger,
Microsoft’s official documentation states that, as of July 2026, all messages identified as bulk and promotional in nature automatically receive the Promotions tag, regardless of their Bulk Complaint Level (BCL) value. The tag is applied by Microsoft 365 mail filtering on the server side. It is not a category that you created manually in New Outlook.
In simpler terms, this is a newer Microsoft 365 email-classification feature. There is currently no end-user setting or button in New Outlook to turn off the Promotions tag itself.

Your IT administrator can control whether tagged messages are automatically moved into a Promotions folder by configuring Bulk moves enabled. However, turning off that setting only stops the automatic folder movement. It does not stop qualifying messages from receiving the tag.
If certain trusted senders or messages sent to specific recipients should not receive the Promotions tag, Microsoft’s documented workaround is for the IT administrator to create a mail flow rule. The rule can exclude the selected sender, domain, or recipient from this classification.

I hope this clarifies why the tag appeared and which options are currently available.
Kind regards,
