A web-based tool in Microsoft 365 that enables users to quickly create surveys, quizzes, polls, and feedback forms.
Microsoft Forms limits the form description to 1,700 characters, so a 1,971-character description must be shortened or moved into the form’s question content; changing from a free to a paid Microsoft Forms account will not raise this limit.
The 1,700-character limit applies to Microsoft personal accounts, Microsoft 365 Apps for business, Office 365 Education, GCC, GCC High, and DoD environments. A form question can contain up to 4,000 characters. ^1^
Practical options
- Put a short introduction of no more than 1,700 characters in the form description.
- Select Add new and add a Text question.
- Put the remaining instructions in the question text, which supports up to 4,000 characters.
- Use Preview to confirm how the content appears to respondents.
Alternatively, keep only a summary in Forms and place the complete instructions in a separate document that respondents can access.
There is no documented Microsoft Forms edition with a higher form-description limit. If a larger description field is essential, submit a feature request from the form’s upper-right menu: More form settings (…) → Feedback. ^2^
