Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
Settle the past-due Microsoft 365 charge first, then end recurring billing, remove the US payment method, change the account country to India, and add an Indian payment method.
1. Resolve the pending charge
This is an account-specific billing matter, so it cannot be cleared by a Microsoft Q&A responder.
- Sign in to Services & subscriptions using the Microsoft account that purchased Microsoft 365.
- Find the past-due subscription and select Pay now.
- Update or add a valid payment method if requested, select Next, and complete payment. Gift cards, subscription cards, and Microsoft account balance cannot pay a past-due subscription.[^1^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Pay for a past-due Microsoft subscription")
- Verify that the balance no longer shows as due.
If the charge is an auto-renewal that you dispute or you cannot pay it, select Contact Support from Microsoft’s support flow and ask the billing team to review that specific transaction. Microsoft Q&A cannot cancel, waive, or refund an account charge. Microsoft notes that money owing generally must be paid before the subscription can be cancelled.[^2^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Unable to cancel your Microsoft subscription | Microsoft Support")
If Microsoft 365 was purchased through Apple, Google Play, Amazon, or another retailer, billing and cancellation must instead be handled by that provider.[^3^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Where can I manage my Microsoft 365 subscription? | Microsoft Support")
2. Stop any further renewal
On Services & subscriptions, select Manage beside Microsoft 365:
- If Cancel subscription appears, select it and then I don’t want my subscription.
- If Turn on recurring billing appears, recurring billing is already disabled and no further renewal action is required.^4^
Wait until the old US subscription is fully expired or removed before buying the India-region subscription.
3. Remove the US payment method
After the outstanding balance and subscription dependency have been resolved:
- Open the Microsoft account Payment options page.
- Find the US card or other payment method.
- Select Remove, then confirm Remove.^5^
A past-due balance can prevent removal of a payment option, so do not remove the card before resolving Step 1.^6^
4. Change the country and purchase in INR
- In the Microsoft account dashboard, open Your info.
- Select Edit profile info.
- Change Country or region to India.
- Return to Payment options and select Add a new payment method.
- Enter the Indian payment method and its matching Indian billing address.
- Purchase a new Microsoft 365 subscription from the India Microsoft Store. Not every payment type is supported in every region.^7^
If the country still cannot be changed after the balance is settled, possible blockers include a country change within the previous three months or another account suspension. Contact Microsoft Support if neither condition can be resolved through the account dashboard.
Data safety
Expiration does not immediately delete your files or email:
- Existing OneDrive files remain.
- Outlook.com remains active.
- Office documents remain available, although desktop apps enter reduced-functionality mode.
- The OneDrive allowance returns to the free 5 GB level. If usage exceeds that quota, uploads and synchronization can stop; after three months OneDrive can be frozen, and after six months Microsoft might delete the OneDrive and its files.
- Outlook.com can stop sending and receiving mail if the applicable storage quota is exceeded.[^8^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "What happens when your Microsoft 365 subscription expires | Microsoft Support")
Before delaying the new purchase, check Microsoft storage usage and download a backup of essential files. Repurchasing Microsoft 365 with the same Microsoft account avoids creating a separate account for the existing OneDrive and Outlook data.
