Processes in Microsoft 365 for setting up Office apps, redeeming product keys, and activating licenses.
Check the Services & subscriptions page while signed in with the Microsoft account used to purchase Microsoft 365; it will show whether the subscription is active, expiring, or expired.[^1^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "What happens when your Microsoft 365 subscription expires | Microsoft Support")
Check your subscription
- Close Word, Excel, and any other Office programs.
- Open this page: https://account.microsoft.com/services
- Select Sign in.
- Enter the email address and password used when Microsoft 365 was purchased.
- Look under Services & subscriptions:
- Next charge means the subscription is active and will renew automatically.
- Expires on [date] means it is active until that date but will not renew automatically.
- Expired means the subscription has ended.
If nothing is listed, try another personal email address that you may have used to buy Microsoft 365.^2^
If it has expired
- To continue using the full Word, Excel, and other desktop programs, select the Renew option on the subscription page and follow the payment instructions.
- If you do not want to renew, you can use Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for free in a web browser at Office.com.[^3^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID]'re-still-getting-notifications-after-renewing-or-buying-microsoft-365 "A subscription notice appears when I open a Microsoft 365 application | Microsoft Support")
An expired subscription does not immediately remove your documents. The installed Office programs can normally still open and print files, but they cannot create or edit documents until the subscription is renewed. OneDrive storage also returns to the free allowance, so check your stored files if you decide not to renew.[^1^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "What happens when your Microsoft 365 subscription expires | Microsoft Support")
If someone helps you with these steps, do not tell them your Microsoft password or any payment-card security code.
