How to cancel 365 personal when upgrading to 365 Family

May 2026 I purchased Office 365 Personal at $99.99. On 10/21/2026, following MS recommendation to upgrade to Office 365 Family, I did so. Thought the upgrade cost of $129.99 would have been prorated based on my initial purchase in May 2026 of $99.99, However, I was actually billed the full amount for Family and now have two active accounts. Am not able to cancel the Personal subscription and would like a refund for the prorated amount between the two subscriptions, or ??? Have not received any information or direction from MS. Please advise.

Hello

When you upgraded, it should have converted the remaining of personal subscription duration at a 92% conversation rate to family plan.

Any chance your personal plan was purchased from a third party? If so, then the family subscription could be treated as a separate subscription.

Otherwise I am afraid you need to contact billing support for them to review and adjsut as needed.

This is a public forum, so for your privacy and security, we can’t help with billing issues here. Also, no one in this forum has access to your account or payment information.

To get help, open the "Get Help" app on your computer (just search for it in the Start menu). or go to https://support.microsoft.com/contactus, Type "Billing" and press Enter. On the next screen, click "Contact support" at the bottom of the page, then choose "Microsoft 365" > "Manage my subscription". You’ll then see the option to chat with a Microsoft support agent who has access to your account to help review the issue.

The full Family price is expected when upgrading; if both plans used the same Microsoft account, the unused Personal term should convert into additional Family time at 92% rather than produce a cash discount or prorated refund.[^1^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Switch between Microsoft 365 subscriptions")

Check whether the upgrade was converted

  1. Sign in to Services & subscriptions using the account that purchased Personal: https://account.microsoft.com/services/microsoft365
  2. Check the Family expiration/renewal date.
  3. If Personal and Family were purchased under the same Microsoft account, Personal’s remaining days should have been converted and added to Family. For a Personal-to-Family change, Microsoft applies 92% of the remaining Personal time.[^1^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Switch between Microsoft 365 subscriptions")
  4. If Family has the extended date, no cash refund is normally generated—the added Family time is the credit for the unused Personal period.

If Personal and Family are actually separate subscriptions

This can happen when Family was bought with a different Microsoft account. Check Services & subscriptions for every Microsoft account that might have been used.

On the account showing Personal:

  1. Select Manage.
  2. Select Cancel or Upgrade or Cancel.
  3. Complete the cancellation prompts. Microsoft displays any refund eligibility during that process; cancellation does not automatically guarantee a refund.[^2^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Microsoft 365")
  4. If the page shows Turn on recurring billing, recurring billing is already disabled and the subscription will expire on the displayed date rather than renew.

Microsoft’s current policy generally allows a refund within 30 days of an initial purchase or within 30 days after the most recent recurring charge. Prorated refunds outside that window are available only in specified countries or regions and are determined automatically during cancellation.[^3^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Microsoft subscription refund policy")

Because Personal was purchased in May rather than within the normal 30-day window, a prorated Personal refund depends mainly on the purchase country and applicable law. If no refund is offered, access normally continues until the end of its paid term.

If Personal cannot be cancelled

Use Microsoft Support rather than cancelling Family:

  1. Open Contact Microsoft Support from the refund-policy page.
  2. Enter Microsoft 365 duplicate subscription refund and select Get Help.
  3. Choose Contact Support when offered.
  4. Provide both order dates, the two account sign-in addresses, and screenshots of each subscription page—but redact payment-card details.
  5. Ask Support to determine whether the Personal term should have converted into Family time or whether these are independent purchases requiring a billing adjustment.

If either subscription was purchased through Apple, Google Play, or another retailer, cancellation and refund must instead be handled by that seller.[^4^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Cancel a Microsoft 365 subscription | Microsoft Support")
