    Hello,

When you try to open the Personal Vault folder on your device, do you receive an error message, or are the files missing entirely?

Have you checked whether you can access the files in your Personal Vault through the OneDrive website?

    • Go to https://onedrive.live.com/ in a private browsing window.
    • Open My Files, select the Personal Vault folder, and verify your identity. Then, check whether you can access all the files stored there.
    • If the files are available online but do not appear in the OneDrive desktop app, this may be a temporary synchronization issue.

To restart the synchronization process, try resetting OneDrive or unlinking and relinking your account.

    Reset OneDrive:

Open Personal Vault on the OneDrive website first; this determines whether the files remain in the cloud and whether the problem is limited to the app or device.

    Check the vault online

    1. Go to OneDrive.com and sign in with the same personal Microsoft account originally used for the vault.
    2. Under My files, select Personal Vault.
    3. Complete the requested identity verification by text, email, Microsoft Authenticator, PIN, fingerprint, or face recognition.
    4. Check whether the files appear.

Personal Vault must be unlocked through an additional identity-verification step. Its files do not appear in normal OneDrive search results, so an empty search does not establish that they were deleted.^1^^2^

    If the files appear online

The cloud copy is intact, and the issue is with the affected app or device.

    • Windows: Select the OneDrive cloud icon in the notification area and choose Unlock Personal Vault. Complete verification, close any open vault files, and allow synchronization to finish before locking it again.^3^
    • If the vault shortcut is missing after reinstalling Windows, opening and unlocking the vault through the OneDrive taskbar menu can recreate access to it.^4^
    • iPhone/iPad: If the website works but the app keeps offering to set up a new vault, sign out of the OneDrive app and sign back in with the same account. This resolved the matching iOS symptom in Microsoft Q&A.^5^

Do not create a new vault under another account while locating the existing files.

If the vault opens online but is empty

    1. In OneDrive on the web, select Recycle bin.
    2. Select Show Personal Vault items. Deleted vault files are visible there only after the vault is unlocked.
    3. Select the missing files or folders, then choose Restore.^6^
    4. If nothing appears, sign out and check any other personal, work, or school Microsoft account previously used on the device. Files may be stored in a different OneDrive account.^2^

For personal accounts, deleted items can normally be restored from the OneDrive Recycle Bin within 30 days, but permanently deleted items cannot be recovered.^6^

    Last recovery option

If many files disappeared recently and the account has a Microsoft 365 subscription, use OneDrive website → Settings → Options → Restore your OneDrive, then select a point before the disappearance. This rolls back OneDrive activity from the last 30 days.^7^

Caution: An entire-OneDrive restore affects more than Personal Vault; files created after the selected restore point are moved to the Recycle Bin. Review the listed activity before selecting Restore.

If the website itself cannot unlock the vault, record the exact message and error code before contacting Microsoft Support. Avoid posting verification codes, account addresses, or other private information publicly.
