Added info: I followed the AI Instructions first, as your email recommended. I was able to find the files in the OneDrive recycle bin and moved the 2 I needed to keep. BUT...while I could access those files by going into my OneDrive Vault using the cloud Icon bottom right of search bar, I could not update either of them. I do still see, and can access & updated them, in my regular list of files in my documents. Does that mean I should just update my 2 documents and put them back in the Vault? Then I can delete the remaining files in the OneDrive Recycle Bin that I do NOT want to keep. It seems to me that should now solve my problem. Someone! Please respond! Thanks, Nan

    Hi, Nanette Krueger

I'm sorry you're dealing with this. When a Vault suddenly looks empty, it's usually a sign-in, app or subscription glitch and not actual deletion, especially if it happened right after an app update.

Here are some suggestions you can try:

On a different device, open OneDrive.com in a private or incognito window and unlock the Vault there. If your files show up on the web, sign out of the OneDrive app on your phone or PC and sign back in. After some updates, the app asks you to "set up" the Vault again and shows it as empty, even though the files are still safe online.

On OneDrive.com, click the gear icon > Plans and upgrades and make sure your 1 TB subscription is still active. If the subscription expired or a payment failed, you may lose access to your files.

If any PC still shows files in its Personal Vault folder, copy them to a USB drive or another safe place first. Vault files deleted on a PC skip the computer's Recycle Bin, so it's better not to take chances.

To reach a real person, it is recommended that you email the OneDrive support team directly here: https://support.microsoft.com/home/contact. Include roughly when the files disappeared, the last device you used and a few file names. That gives them what they need to check your file history.

Unlock the Personal Vault from OneDrive’s web Recycle Bin first, because deleted Vault files remain hidden there until Show Personal Vault items is selected.

    Recover the Personal Vault files

    1. Sign in at OneDrive.com using the Microsoft account that owns the 1-TB subscription.
    2. Select Recycle bin in the left navigation.
    3. Select Show Personal Vault items and complete the identity verification.
    4. Select the missing documents, then select Restore. Personal-account files can normally be restored from the Recycle Bin within 30 days, unless they were permanently deleted. ^1^
    5. Open My files → Personal Vault and verify that the documents have returned.

Personal Vault documents do not appear in OneDrive search results, so searching by filename cannot confirm whether they still exist in the Vault. Also check that the browser is signed in to the correct Microsoft account, especially if multiple personal, work, or school accounts are used. ^2^

If the entire Vault was emptied recently

Because the account includes Microsoft 365 storage, restore the whole OneDrive to a point before the documents disappeared:

    1. On OneDrive.com, select Settings → Options → Restore your OneDrive.
    2. Choose Yesterday or Custom date and time.
    3. Use the activity chart to locate the deletion or other unexpected activity.
    4. Select the earliest activity to undo, review everything selected after it, and choose Restore.

This can reverse file and folder changes made during the previous 30 days. Caution: files created after the selected restore point move to the Recycle Bin, where they can be restored separately. Permanently deleted Recycle Bin items cannot be recovered. ^3^

    Reach a Microsoft support agent

Since the chatbot did not help, use Microsoft’s technical-support contact page:

    1. Open Contact Microsoft customer support.
    2. Select the Personal account tab.
    3. Under Microsoft technical support, select Get help.
    4. Enter:
“OneDrive Personal Vault suddenly empty. Recycle Bin and Restore your OneDrive checked. I need a technical support agent.”
    5. Select the offered contact option, which may include live chat. Available options depend on the product, subscription, region, and time. ^4^

Have the approximate date the files disappeared, the last device used, and several filenames ready. Do not post account details publicly.

Microsoft support can investigate the account or service issue, but agents are not permitted to open or access the contents of personal files. If the files are absent from the unlocked Recycle Bin, outside the 30-day restore window, and permanently deleted, Microsoft documents no additional recovery method. ^2^
