A Microsoft file hosting and synchronization service.
Delete only the faulty Personal Vault.lnk shortcut after confirming the actual vault files are accessible online; do not delete the Personal Vault folder, photos, or research files.
1. Protect and verify the actual files
- Open OneDrive on the web and sign in to the same personal Microsoft account.
- Open Personal Vault, complete identity verification, and confirm that its important files are present and readable. Personal Vault contents are separate from the local
.lnkshortcut used to open the vault on the PC.^1^ - For maximum caution, temporarily move the vault files to a normal OneDrive folder or download a separate copy before changing the shortcut. A closely matching Windows 11 case recommends moving the contents out temporarily, deleting only the erroneous vault
.lnk, and moving the files back after access is restored.^2^
2. Find and remove only Personal Vault.lnk
- Open File Explorer.
- Select View → Show → File name extensions.
- Also select View → Show → Hidden items because a file responsible for a sync problem can be hidden.^3^
- Open the local personal OneDrive folder—normally shown as OneDrive – Personal in the navigation pane.
- Search for:
Personal Vault.lnkIf that returns nothing, search for:*.lnk - Confirm that the selected item is the shortcut named in OneDrive’s error list. Do not remove similarly named folders or any photo/document files.
- Right-click that
.lnkfile and select Delete, then refresh the OneDrive folder. The matching accepted resolution says the vault shortcut should be recreated and the error should clear.^2^ - Open the recreated Personal Vault, verify access, and return any files moved out temporarily.
Deleting a .lnk removes a shortcut, not the files to which it points. Nevertheless, verify the web copy first because the error list alone does not prove that every important file has finished syncing.
3. Resolve the PNG entries separately
The PNG screenshots are real files, unlike the vault shortcut. Do not delete them merely because they appear in the same error list.
For each PNG listed:
- Click the OneDrive cloud icon near the Windows clock, then open the sync-problem details and note the exact filename and folder.
- In File Explorer, locate the PNG and open it to ensure it is intact.
- Check its full name for:
- Any of these unsupported characters:
" * : < > ? / \ | - A leading or trailing space
- A reserved name such as
CON,PRN,AUX,NUL,COM0–COM9, orLPT0–LPT9.^4^
- Any of these unsupported characters:
- If the name violates one of those rules, select the file, press F2, and give it a simple unique name such as
Screenshot-2026-10-28-01.png. - Wait for OneDrive to process the change and confirm that the PNG disappears from the sync-problem list.
- Repeat for each PNG individually so that any remaining failure can be tied to one specific file.
If the red X remains
- Reopen the OneDrive error list; a red X can represent more than one unresolved item.
- If the vault reports that it is not up to date rather than rejecting the shortcut, unlock it, close files stored inside it, and leave it unlocked until synchronization completes.^5^
- If no specific item remains but the red X persists, use Microsoft’s personal-account guided troubleshooting or unlink/relink procedure.^6^
- Before unlinking, retain the separate copy of important files and verify their presence online.
