Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
Office Home & Business 2021 is a one-time license and must use Office apps downloaded directly from Microsoft—not the Mac App Store—so first replace any App Store copy with Microsoft’s Office 2021 installer.
1. Reinstall the correct Office 2021 build
Apps obtained from the Mac App Store require a Microsoft 365 subscription and cannot activate with a perpetual Office license. Microsoft’s direct installer includes the licensing helper required by Office Home & Business 2021.^1^
- Close Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
- Open Finder > Applications.
- Select the Office apps, Control-click them, and choose Move to Bin.
- Download the Office 2021 for Mac Installer directly from Microsoft.
- Open the downloaded
.pkgfile and complete installation. - Open Word from Launchpad, select Get Started, and sign in with the account already showing the Office 2021 purchase.
- Restart the Mac after activation.
2. If the Microsoft-installed copy still reports “No license found”
Clear the locally cached Office licenses. This removes activation data from the Mac, not the purchase from the Microsoft account.^2^
- Close every Office application.
- Download and run Microsoft’s license removal tool.
- Open the downloaded
.pkg, select Continue, and complete the wizard. A Mac administrator password may be required. - Reinstall Office from the direct Microsoft installer above if necessary.
- Open Word and sign in again to activate Office 2021.
- Restart the Mac.
Alternatively, Microsoft’s activation procedure says to open Spotlight > Keychain Access, search for Office, delete the Office data-license entry, and then run the Microsoft 365 Activation troubleshooter through Get Help.^3^
3. Check the licensing-helper folder
For a confirmed one-time purchase that still cannot activate:
- Open Finder > Go > Computer.
- Navigate to Macintosh HD > Library.
- Inspect PrivilegedHelperTools.
- If it has a red stop icon, open Terminal and run:
cd /Library
sudo -s
chmod 755 ./PrivilegedHelperTools
exit
Enter the Mac administrator password when requested; Terminal will not display password characters. Quit and reopen Office, then activate again.^3^
If the folder is accessible but empty, uninstall and reinstall Office from Microsoft, then confirm it contains com.microsoft.office.licensingV2.helper. That helper provides device-wide activation for perpetual licenses such as Office Home & Business 2021.^4^
If Word or Excel is version 16.114.1
Check Word > About Word or Excel > About Excel. If the exact error says that the Office 2021 license is unsupported with application version 16.114.1, a closely matched Microsoft Q&A case recommends completely uninstalling Office, installing version 16.114, and temporarily turning off automatic updates.^5^
This is a community-reported workaround, not a formal Microsoft Support resolution. Staying on an older build or disabling automatic updates can delay security fixes. Check manually for a corrected build and re-enable Help > Check for Updates > Automatically keep Microsoft apps up to date as soon as Microsoft publishes one.
If activation still fails
Open the macOS Get Help app and contact Microsoft Support. Provide:
- macOS version
- Office application version and build
- Exact activation error
- Screenshot showing Office 2021 under Services & subscriptions
- Confirmation that the Microsoft installer, license-removal tool, and helper-folder checks were completed
Microsoft Support must investigate or correct any account-side entitlement that remains unrecognized.
