Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
I have tried this and still no luck. Plus I am getting a crazy run around with my login attempts. It keeps sending activation codes to an email that is no longer associated with the account. I had a separate Microsoft accoutn at that email, so I feel like somehow it is getting confused. I tried to delete that account but it won't delete till the end of hte year so it keeps doing that.
Hi Saraswati Khalsa, the behaviors you described seem different compared to the licensing issue other members have been reporting. That might be unrelated so we will just go through each of them. First, just to make sure I understand the account situation correctly: when you mention the old email address, do you mean it used to be an alias and you removed it, making it a separate Microsoft account? Or it was a verification method in Security, and you're sure it was removed?
If it's the latter case, do you have another replacement for it? Or you currently don't have any verification method? You may temporarily add Authenticator app or turn off two-step verification (not recommended since it poses security risks) to test.
Also, when Microsoft sends the code to that old email address, at what point does this happen: when signing in at https://account.microsoft.com, or only when activating Office on your Mac?
Secondly, I need to note is that the information in my answer is no longer the latest. Like what Stefan said above, the newer version (16.114.3) has resolved the licensing issue. You can download that version now (or directly from your Subscription page) to see if it's working:
- Remove your Office apps from Finder > Applications to Trash.
- Then go to Subscriptions > click the Install Office button.
- Next, open Finder > Go > Computer > Macintosh HD > Library
- Look for
PrivilegedHelperToolsand see if it's marked "no access” - If yes, and you're comfortable with using command tool:
- Open Applications > Utilities > Terminal
- Run
cd /Library, then runsudo chmod 755 ./PrivilegedHelperTools
- Quit Office completely / restart your Mac > reopen Word.
If none of that changes the message, the remaining likely cause is that the purchase is not being seen as a Mac-eligible Office 2021 license on Microsoft’s side. Since Microsoft Q&A is just a community forum with no access to users' data to verify your license record, you would need to reach out:
- Go to Contact - Microsoft Support > sign in with your account.
- Search
Contact> Get Help > scroll down and click Ask our Support Assistant - Specifically state in the chat that you need an agent to review > click Contact Support
- Choose Microsoft 365 and Office > Technical support (if available) > Confirm.
- You can choose to chat with a support agent on your web browser.
Note: The support contact team only works at certain times, so if the last window shows that it's unavailable, try opening it again the next day. If you prefer phone support, you can leave a phone number. This way, they can call you and help you. If you don't see chat option, choose another category and ask to escalate.
