Unable to open Outlook in either the app or the web version. Tried multiple browsers, incognito mode - no luck. Get this error above. Doesn't work in safe mode either.

    Hello @Adnan Millwala

Based on the information provided, it appears that you are receiving a 500 error when trying to access Outlook, and the issue occurs in both Outlook on the web and the Outlook desktop application.

First, could you please confirm whether you are using a personal Microsoft account or a work/school Microsoft 365 account? You can normally identify this based on where you access Outlook:

If the issue has only recently started, I recommend trying again after 24 hours to check whether access is restored. If the issue continues, the next step will depend on your account type:

For a personal Microsoft account: Please contact Microsoft Consumer Support through Microsoft Support. Sign in with the affected personal Microsoft account and provide a brief description of the Outlook 500 error and the troubleshooting you have already performed.

For a work or school account: Please contact your organization's IT administrator so they can check the account and mailbox from the Microsoft 365 admin side. They can verify whether the Exchange Online mailbox and the required license are properly provisioned and whether there are any account-specific issues.

It would also be helpful for the administrator to check whether other users in the same organization are experiencing the same Outlook 500 error. This can help determine whether the issue is isolated to your account or affecting multiple users.

For further technical investigation is required, your IT administrator can contact Microsoft Support by following the instructions in Get support – Microsoft 365 admin. When opening the support request, please make sure to disable the Support Assistant (AI) in the Help panel first. After that, enter a brief description of the issue. Once the AI assistant is turned off, the Contact Support option should become available, allowing you to submit a support ticket directly to Microsoft's support team.

If you have any updates after trying the steps above, please feel free to share them with me at any time. I will be happy to provide further guidance based on the results.

Because the same HTTP 500 StartupData failure occurs in Outlook on the web and the desktop app, send the screenshot and error details to your Microsoft 365 administrator for Exchange Online mailbox, licensing, and provisioning checks rather than repeating browser or Outlook repairs.

    Administrator actions

    1. Check Exchange Online service health
      • Open Microsoft 365 admin center → Health → Service health → Exchange Online.
      • If an applicable incident appears, monitor that incident for recovery updates rather than changing the mailbox configuration. Microsoft recommends checking service health before further troubleshooting.^1^
      • The public status page currently does not show a broad outage, but tenant-specific incidents may appear only in the authenticated admin center.^2^
    2. Verify the affected user has a valid Exchange Online license
      • Go to Users → Active users → select the user → Licenses and apps.
      • Confirm that:
        • A valid Microsoft 365/Exchange Online license is assigned.
        • Exchange Online is enabled under Apps.
      • If the license is missing, assign one. If Exchange Online is disabled, enable it and save. Exchange Online disconnects a regular mailbox when its license is removed or expires; reassigning the license within 30 days reconnects it.^3^
      • Allow the change to provision before testing again. Provisioning normally takes less than 30 minutes but can take up to 24 hours in some cases.^4^
    3. Run the mailbox and connectivity diagnostics
      • In Microsoft 365 admin center → Help & support, enter the affected user and run:
        • Recipient failure / Exchange Online recipient diagnostic to check mailbox provisioning.
        • Outlook User Connectivity to test service-side settings that affect Outlook connectivity.
      • Alternatively, in the Exchange admin center, open Troubleshoot → Diagnostics → Recipient.^5^
      • These diagnostics provide findings and remediation instructions but do not change the tenant without administrator consent.

The Microsoft 365 admin-center diagnostics are unavailable in GCC High, DoD, and Microsoft 365 operated by 21Vianet; use available Exchange admin center or Exchange Online PowerShell diagnostics, or contact support. The Outlook User Connectivity diagnostic is also unavailable in Microsoft 365 Germany and certain government environments.^5^^6^

If the license and diagnostics do not resolve it

Have an administrator open Microsoft 365 admin center → Help & support → Contact Support. If all subscriptions were purchased through a partner, contact that partner instead.^7^

    Include:

    • “Affected mailbox fails in both Outlook on the web and the desktop app.”
    • UTC timestamp: 2026-10-28T14:42:11.037Z
    • Error: 500
    • BootResult: fail
    • esrc: StartupData
    • et: ServerError
    • The request ID and correlation vector from the screenshot
    • Results of the license, service-health, Recipient, and Outlook User Connectivity checks

Do not post the request ID, session details, tenant information, or email address publicly. Microsoft Support can investigate mailbox/backend state that cannot be repaired from the client.
