Sending, receiving, and organizing email in Outlook on the web for business
Dear Robert,
For Microsoft 365 work or school accounts, deleted emails may be recoverable from the Deleted Items or Recoverable Items folder, but only for a limited period. Once Microsoft's retention period has passed or the account has been permanently deleted, the emails generally cannot be recovered. For more information, please refer to Recover and restore deleted items in Outlook
Moreover, recovery depends on the organization's retention policies, mailbox retention settings, and whether the mailbox was preserved after the account was closed. A Microsoft 365 administrator may be able to restore deleted mailboxes or recover content if it remains within the retention period. For reference: Common settings for retention policies and retention label policies
However, if the emails were in your account before the account was closed, recovery may not be possible if the account was permanently deleted and later recreated. In many cases, when an account is closed and then reopened after the allowable recovery period, the original mailbox contents are permanently removed and cannot be restored.
In this case, I recommend reaching out to your organization's IT administrator. They can check whether the mailbox still exists, whether any retention policies were configured, and whether the mailbox or its contents can be restored. For reference: How do I find my Microsoft 365 admin?
For more information:
- Delete or restore user mailboxes in Exchange Online
- Create a search for a case in eDiscovery and Manage holds in eDiscovery
Note: As this is a public forum, please understand that no one has access to your account or mailbox and cannot recover emails on your behalf.
Thank you for your patience and understanding. If you have any questions or are stuck on any steps, please feel free to reach out. I'm looking forward to your update.
