Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
Purchase the additional license type as a new Microsoft-direct subscription in the same tenant, and because multiple cards have already failed validation, escalate the checkout failure to Microsoft Sales Support rather than continuing to retry cards.
1. Check the one documented card requirement that affects every card
For Microsoft business purchases, the card must be issued in the same country/region as the Microsoft 365 tenant. Prepaid and gift cards are not accepted. Confirm the tenant’s country against the cards’ issuing country; changing only the typed billing address does not make a card from another country eligible. Also ensure the billing address exactly matches the card provider’s records.^1^
If the countries already match, there is no value in repeating the same card-entry attempts. Contact the card issuer to determine whether it sees and blocks Microsoft’s authorization attempt. If the issuer sees no attempt, provide that detail to Microsoft Sales.
2. Buy the license as a separate Microsoft-direct subscription
The IONOS subscription remains partner-billed, but another subscription purchased through the Microsoft 365 admin center is associated with the same organization and can be assigned to its users.^2^
Sign in using a Billing Administrator account. For an MCA billing account, the account must also be a billing account owner or contributor.
- In the Microsoft 365 admin center:
- Simplified view: Billing > Add more products
- Dashboard view: Billing > Marketplace
- Find the required plan and select Details.
- Select the license quantity, subscription length, and billing frequency, then select Buy.
- At checkout:
- For an MCA account, choose or add a billing profile.
- For a MOSA account, select Add a payment method.
- Enter the card and billing address, then place the order.
Adding a payment method on the standalone Payment methods page does not automatically associate it with a subscription or billing profile. It must subsequently be selected during checkout or assigned by replacing the billing profile’s payment method.^1^
3. Escalate the persistent validation failure
Because all current subscriptions were purchased through IONOS, Microsoft’s documented online support route in the admin center might not be available: Microsoft requires at least one subscription purchased directly from Microsoft before that support channel can be used. Partner-purchased subscriptions normally receive support from the partner.^3^
For a blocked first direct purchase, use Microsoft Sales Support. Microsoft lists 1-800-642-7676, Monday–Friday, 6 AM–6 PM Pacific Time, for work-account purchase assistance.^4^
Have these details ready:
- Tenant’s country/region
- Card-issuing country
- Exact error text and screenshot
- Date, time, and time zone of the latest attempt
- Confirmation from the card issuer whether an authorization attempt appeared
- Browser/session details
- The Microsoft 365 product and license quantity being purchased
Do not send Microsoft or post publicly the full card number, security code, tenant ID, or other sensitive account details.
After the first Microsoft-direct subscription is successfully purchased, an administrator can open future billing cases through Admin center > Help & support > Contact Support, selecting phone or email.^3^
