Hello,

I have already purchased a microsoft package for my computer in 2023 but I thought when I received an email today that I needed to sign up for another one. I did sign up but I think I have already paid for this service and now I have paid twice.

    Hello Lori Bryden,

I understand your concern about possibly paying twice for Microsoft Office.

One thing worth checking first is what type of Microsoft Office package you purchased in 2023.

    • Office 2021 or another one-time purchase: This is a perpetual license, so you generally don't need a Microsoft 365 subscription to continue using it.
    • Microsoft 365 subscription: Purchasing the same subscription again may extend your existing subscription period rather than create a separate one.

You can check the product names and expiration dates under Services & subscriptions.

Could you confirm the exact name of the Office product you purchased in 2023? That should help us determine whether the new purchase was actually necessary before proceeding with cancellation or a refund.

Check your Microsoft order history first, identify the newer unintended Microsoft 365 subscription, and then cancel that specific subscription to see whether it qualifies for a refund.

Verify whether there are two subscriptions

    1. Sign in to the Microsoft account dashboard using the account that made today’s purchase.
    2. Open Payment & billing → Order history and compare today’s purchase with the earlier Microsoft 365 payment.
    3. Open Services & subscriptions and note each subscription’s:
      • Plan name
      • Purchase or renewal date
      • Expiration date
      • Microsoft account used

The dashboard contains both order history and subscription management. If two charges appear on the bank statement but only one appears in order history, select Payment options → Investigate to search for another Microsoft account using the same payment card.^1^

Also check any other personal Microsoft account you may have used in 2023. A second subscription can be attached to a different email address even when both purchases used the same card.

Cancel the unintended purchase and check for a refund

If today’s purchase is a separate Microsoft 365 Basic, Personal, Family, or Premium subscription purchased directly from Microsoft:

    1. Sign in at https://account.microsoft.com/services/microsoft365 with the account used for today’s purchase.
    2. Locate the new subscription, carefully distinguishing it from the 2023 subscription you want to keep.
    3. Select Manage.
    4. Select Cancel or Upgrade or Cancel.
    5. Complete the cancellation prompts. Microsoft will determine refund eligibility during this process; cancellation does not always result in a refund.[^2^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Microsoft subscription refund policy | Microsoft Support")

If the page displays Turn on recurring billing instead of Manage or Cancel, that subscription is already set to expire on the date shown and will not renew automatically.[^3^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Microsoft 365")

Before confirming cancellation, verify that you selected the newly purchased subscription. Cancelling the subscription you intended to keep could affect its Microsoft 365 benefits and associated cloud-storage allowance.

If Microsoft does not show the purchase

    • Purchased through Apple App Store or Google Play: request cancellation and a refund from Apple or Google, not Microsoft.
    • Purchased from another retailer: contact that retailer to manage the subscription and billing.
    • No cancellation option: verify that you are signed in with the same personal Microsoft account used to make the purchase.[^4^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Unable to cancel your Microsoft subscription | Microsoft Support")

If both payments were made directly to Microsoft but the cancellation process does not offer a refund, use Microsoft Support, enter billing, select Get Help, and then Contact Support. Have the dates, amounts, payment method, and order numbers ready.^5^
