Office Home & Student 2021 is a one-time purchase, but Mac App Store Office apps are not compatible with one-time Office licenses. If the Mac has the App Store version of Word, Excel, or PowerPoint installed, those apps will show subscription prompts such as "no subscriptions to be found" or reduced functionality.

    Use this path:

    1. Do not rely on the Mac App Store apps. One-time licenses such as Office 2021 must be used with Office apps downloaded directly from Microsoft.
    2. Remove the current Office apps from the Mac.
      • Close Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
      • Open Finder > Applications.
      • Locate the Office apps, control-click each one, and choose Move to Trash.
    3. Install the Microsoft version for Mac. Download and install one of these Microsoft installers:
    4. Activate with the same Microsoft account that owns Office Home & Student 2021. If the product key was already redeemed, reinstall by signing in with the Microsoft account associated with that purchase.
    5. About the old Windows laptop: Office Home & Student / Home & Business / Professional can be installed on a single computer. If moving it to another computer, the supported process is to install on the new computer, activate it, and uninstall Office from the original computer. The old installation still working can be part of why activation on the new Mac is blocked.

If the Mac installer came from the App Store version, replacing it with the direct Microsoft installer is the key fix.

    Hello Ankur Saroj,

I understand why you're hesitant to remove Office from your old laptop, especially when you're unsure whether it will activate on your new Mac.

It's important to determine whether your Office Home & Student 2021 license is OEM or retail.

    • OEM/preinstalled license: If Office was included with your Windows laptop by the manufacturer, the license is generally tied to that device and cannot be transferred to your Mac.
    • Retail license: If you purchased Office 2021 separately, transferring it may be possible under Microsoft's licensing terms.

Transfer your Office license to another device

For now, please don't uninstall Office from your old laptop.

Could you confirm whether Office 2021 came preinstalled and included with your laptop, or whether you purchased it separately with its own license or product key?

That will help determine whether your existing license can be transferred before you risk losing access on the old laptop.
