I purchased a new Mac and Microsoft Office Home & Student 2021 together from Dell for $149.99. Word was working, but it now says “License: Not Activated.” Under About Microsoft Word, it identifies an outlook email as the associated account. I cannot access that account, and Microsoft's account recovery process was unsuccessful. I have proof of purchase from Dell. I need help restoring activation of my existing Office 2021 license without purchasing another subscription. What options are available?

Check Word → About Microsoft Word first: if the installed build is 16.114.1 (26102031), update to 16.114.2 before changing licensing data, then use the documented rollback to 16.114 or 16.113.4 only if activation remains broken.

If Word shows version 16.114.1

Version 16.114.2 is now the current Office for Mac release, but Microsoft’s release history does not state whether it fixes this activation problem.^1^

Quit all Office applications.
Install Microsoft’s Word 16.114.2 update package: Microsoft Word 16.114.2 updater
Reopen Word and check whether it remains activated.

If 16.114.2 still reports License: Not Activated, closely matched Office Home & Student 2021 cases were resolved by removing 16.114.1 and installing 16.114 instead.^2^

Back up any local templates or customizations.
Close Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
In Finder → Applications, move the Office applications to Trash.
Install Office for Mac 16.114: Microsoft Office 16.114 installer
Open Word and test activation.
If it activates, select Help → Check for Updates, clear Automatically keep Microsoft apps up to date, and select Turn Off.

Pausing updates should be temporary. Office 2021 stopped receiving security and product updates when support ended on October 13, 2026, so continuing to use an older build carries security risk.^3^

Because the licensed account is currently inaccessible, do not run the License Removal Tool before testing these options. That tool removes local licensing data and then requires signing in with the account associated with the license to reactivate.^4^

If Word is not running 16.114.1

The Outlook address displayed in Word may be the signed-in account; by itself, it does not prove that this account owns the Office entitlement. However, once a retail key has been redeemed, Office is added to that Microsoft account and subsequent installation and activation normally use the account rather than the key.^5^

The available documentation provides no self-service procedure to move an already-redeemed Office 2021 entitlement to another account using a Dell receipt alone. Since account recovery has already failed, the remaining options are:

Attempt Microsoft Contact Us: choose Office → Account/Billing or Activation, explain that the original account is inaccessible, and provide the Dell invoice and any product-key or order information. Live chat may be offered through the contact page, but it is not guaranteed.^6^
Be aware that Microsoft states Office 2021 no longer receives phone or chat technical support. The sources do not guarantee that support can reassign or restore an account-bound entitlement.^3^
Contact Dell only if the key was never successfully redeemed, the purchase was fulfilled incorrectly, or activation reports KEY_NOT_ACTIVATED. Microsoft documents that KEY_NOT_ACTIVATED means the retailer did not activate the key at the point of sale.^7^ Dell cannot be assumed to reassign an entitlement already redeemed to a Microsoft account.

A new Microsoft 365 subscription is therefore not the first required step: test the version-specific repair first. If that does not apply or fails, restoration depends on regaining the owning account or Microsoft agreeing to assist with the entitlement.
