i have recorded several keystrokes by hitting a single key to start recording and a key to stop and another key to playback the recorded keystrokes. Does anyone know how to do this?

    Hi,

    Are you referring to custom mouse or touchpad gestures, or custom keyboard shortcuts? Also, are you using a Microsoft accessory or one from another manufacturer? If it's from another manufacturer, please provide the make and model.

    Please share more details about what you're trying to do so I can suggest a possible solution.

    Windows does not provide a general built-in keyboard recorder for this; use your keyboard or mouse manufacturer’s macro software, or—if you have Microsoft adaptive accessories—record and assign the sequence in Microsoft Accessory Center.

    Microsoft adaptive accessories

    1. Install and open Microsoft Accessory Center.
    2. Select the profile for the accessory.
    3. Select the button that should play the sequence, then choose Macro.
    4. Select Record action → Start.
    5. Enter the required keystrokes and mouse clicks.
    6. Select Stop.
    7. Save the profile, then press the assigned button to play the entire sequence.

    The recorded macro can include keyboard input, mouse input, pauses, and delays.^1^

    Other keyboards or mice

    Check the device manufacturer’s configuration application for a Macro, Record, or Key Assignment page. A macro-capable device commonly lets you:

    1. Choose an unused key or programmable button.
    2. start recording;
    3. enter the sequence;
    4. stop recording; and
    5. assign the recording to that key.

    Microsoft’s older IntelliPoint implementation follows this model: select a reassignable button, choose Macro, record the keystrokes/clicks/delays, save it, and press that button to play it. That procedure applies only to compatible hardware and software; it is not a universal Windows feature.^2^

    Do not record passwords or other sensitive information in a macro.

    PowerToys limitation

    PowerToys Keyboard Manager does not record an arbitrary series of live keystrokes. It can map one key to:

    • another key;
    • a keyboard shortcut; or
    • a fixed Unicode text string.

    For a fixed text sequence:

    1. Open PowerToys Settings → Keyboard Manager.
    2. Select Remap a key → Add key remapping.
    3. Under Select, choose the trigger key.
    4. Under To send, choose Text and enter the text.
    5. Save the mapping and leave PowerToys running in the background.^3^

    If the sequence contains navigation, function keys, application commands, or timed delays, use macro-capable device software or a third-party macro utility such as AutoHotkey instead; PowerToys remapping is not a substitute for a true recorded macro.^4^
