Formal Complaint – Genuine Office Home & Student 2021 License Cannot Be Activated on Mac

2026-10-27T05:36:00.48+00:00

Dear Microsoft Support Team,

I purchased a genuine Office Home & Student 2021 license directly from Microsoft. The product was successfully registered to my Microsoft account on March 21, 2024, and it is still listed under my purchased products, with the installation option available.

However, Microsoft Word suddenly stopped allowing me to create and edit documents and displays the following message:

"Activate Microsoft 365 to Create and Edit. Your Office 2021 license is not supported with this version of the application."

My system details:

Product: Office Home & Student 2021

Microsoft Word version: 16.114.2 (26102345)

License status: Not Activated

Device: MacBook Air M3 (2024)

Operating system: macOS Tahoe 26.7.1

Purchase registration date: March 21, 2024

I have already reinstalled Office using the official installer available through my Microsoft account, but the activation problem persists.

I understand that support for Office 2021 ended on October 13, 2026. However, I purchased this product as a perpetual license, not a subscription. The end of technical support should not automatically invalidate my right to continue using the software I purchased.

I request Microsoft to:

Investigate why my genuine Office 2021 license is being rejected.

Provide a working activation solution compatible with my Mac.

Clarify whether a recent Office update has affected the activation or compatibility of perpetual Office 2021 licenses.

If Microsoft can no longer enable my purchased product to function, provide an appropriate resolution without requiring me to purchase another license or a Microsoft 365 subscription.

I have attached screenshots showing my registered Office 2021 purchase, the activation error, and the installed Word version.

Please escalate this case to the appropriate licensing or activation support team and provide a case reference number.

Thank you.

Hi, Tony Richard Alexander Samosir

Thanks for providing the screenshots and confirming that reinstalling from your Microsoft account did not help.

You are right to distinguish license ownership from end of support. Microsoft describes Office 2021 as a perpetual, one-time purchase, and its end-of-support notice says the applications may continue functioning. It does not say that existing licenses automatically expire. However, security updates and technical support have ended.

Your installed version is particularly relevant. Other Mac users have reported the same license rejection with 16.114.2. A volunteer moderator recommends removing the local license files and installing the October 6 build instead. This is a community-recommended workaround, not a confirmed Microsoft root-cause fix.

Please try this different recovery path:

Quit all Office applications, then run Microsoft’s Office license removal tool. Have your purchasing account credentials ready, because the tool removes all locally stored Office licenses.

Remove the current Office applications using Microsoft’s uninstall instructions for Mac.

Install the Microsoft-hosted October 6 Office package. Microsoft’s release history identifies this build as 16.113.4 (26100421).

Open Word and sign in with the Microsoft account holding your Office 2021 purchase. Temporarily disable automatic updates through Help > Check for Updates to avoid reinstalling the affected version. Be aware that disabling updates carries security and reliability risks.
