Paid Business Standard license, Word for Mac stuck in view-only for months

I've been paying for Microsoft 365 Business Standard for months and can't edit a single document in Word on my Mac. I'm being fleeced: paying for a license I can't use. Fix it, and credit me for the time I've paid without it.

Error in Word for Mac (MacBook Air): "Ready to View Documents. Your account can view documents, but it doesn't allow editing on a Mac. To edit, use another account to activate Office."

What I've already tried:

  1. Confirmed in the admin center that Microsoft 365 Business Standard is Active and Paid, bought directly from Microsoft, with 1 license, assigned to me.
  2. Confirmed that Microsoft 365 Apps for Business is enabled on my license (Users > Active users > Licenses and apps).
  3. Confirmed that the only other user in the org has no license, so mine isn't assigned to the wrong account. An old Exchange Online (Plan 1) subscription is Disabled, with 0 assigned.
  4. Uninstalled and reinstalled Office, then signed in again with my work account. Same error.
  5. Deleted every Office item in Keychain: Microsoft Office Credentials, com.microsoft.adalcache, and three cached Office access tokens synced through iCloud Keychain. No OneAuth items were present.

Word is still view-only. Replies in writing only. I won't have my time and money wasted any longer by Microsoft's ineffective call or chat agents. This is verging on graft at this point.

    Good day Colin,

Just to gently clarify before going any further, this forum is separate from Microsoft Support. I don’t have the ability to access or investigate individual accounts or escalate the issue directly Microsoft Support because this is a user‑to‑user support forum.

Since you have already completed the standard checks, I recommend removing the Office license information stored on the Mac and then activating Office again. You can follow the steps provided in the AI Answer and this Microsoft article: How to remove Office license files on a Mac | Microsoft Support

    • In the meantime, I recommend testing Word for the web by signing in with the same licensed work account. If you can edit documents there, it helps confirm that the subscription is active while you work through the desktop app activation issue.

If the issue continues after completing those steps, I recommend creating a support request from the Microsoft 365 admin center > Support > Help & Support:

    • Turn off the "Support Assistant" feature.
    • Use the keyword "Support" to quickly bypass automated suggestions > Select Contact Support.

    User's image

Note: You can choose to be contacted by phone for live assistance and a remote session, or select email support if you prefer written communication.

    • In the ticket description, please clearly describe the issue, including any error messages or codes and the steps you’ve already tried. You can also attach screenshots or screen recordings.
    • Additionally, sharing your preferred contact times may help the support team handle the case more efficiently.

A technical support engineer can perform a remote session to investigate the situation, verify the backend configurations, and run any necessary synchronization tools to resolve the problem. If the issue requires further attention, they can escalate it to a specialized team for deeper analysis.

I wish I could help more directly, but as a fellow user in this community, providing these steps is the best support I can offer. If you have any updates or additional questions, feel free to reply back and I'll do my best to assist further.

Run Microsoft’s Office License Removal Tool—deleting Keychain entries and reinstalling Office do not necessarily remove the separate local Office license files that can leave Word activated against the wrong or stale entitlement.

    Reset the local Office license

Microsoft 365 Business Standard includes desktop editing, so the license type itself supports Word for Mac.^1^

    1. Quit Word and every other Office application.
    2. Download Microsoft’s License Removal Tool from the official procedure.^2^
    3. Open the downloaded .pkg.
      • If macOS reports an unidentified developer, Control-click the file → Open.
    4. Select Continue, then Install. Enter the Mac administrator password when prompted.
    5. When the tool reports that the licenses were removed, select Close.
    6. Open Word and sign in using the exact work account to which Business Standard is assigned.
      • If offered a choice of licenses, select the Microsoft 365 subscription license.
    7. After Word activates, restart the Mac and confirm that a new blank document can be edited.
    8. Remove the tool by dragging Microsoft_Office_License_Removal from Finder → Downloads to Trash.

Important: The tool removes all Office licenses stored on that Mac, not the paid cloud subscription. Have the licensed work-account credentials available before running it.^2^

This is the next distinct action after the Keychain cleanup and reinstall already performed. Microsoft also directs users who are activated under the wrong license—or remain prompted after activation—to remove the license files and reactivate.^3^

    If Word remains view-only

At that point, stop repeating local reinstalls and credential deletion. Open a written business-support case for the tenant-side activation state:

    1. Sign in to the Microsoft 365 admin center as an administrator.
    2. Select Help & support at the bottom right.
    3. Enter:
“Microsoft 365 Business Standard assigned with Microsoft 365 Apps for business enabled; Word for Mac reports Ready to View Documents after reinstall, Keychain cleanup, and Office License Removal Tool reset.”
    4. If the suggested results do not resolve it, select Contact Support.
    5. Choose email as the contact method and state written communication only in the case description.

Microsoft documents email as an available contact method for business administrators whose subscription was purchased directly from Microsoft.^4^

    Attach or include:

    • Screenshot of Word’s view-only message.
    • Screenshot showing the subscription is active and paid.
    • Screenshot showing the license assigned to the affected user and the Apps service enabled.
    • Word version from Word → About Microsoft Word.
    • macOS version.
    • Date the problem began.
    • Confirmation that the License Removal Tool completed successfully.

Ask support to verify the user’s desktop-app activation entitlement and activation records, rather than sending another generic reinstall procedure.

    Requesting a credit

A credit cannot be issued through Microsoft Q&A, and the available documentation does not guarantee a retroactive service credit for this scenario. Submit a separate billing request so the activation investigation and compensation request have independent case numbers; Microsoft specifically recommends separate requests for separate issues.^4^

In Admin center → Help & support → Contact Support, choose email and request:

Please review a billing adjustment for the period from [date] through [date]. Microsoft 365 Business Standard remained active and paid, but its licensed desktop Word application stayed in view-only mode. Technical case [case number] documents the activation failure. Please respond in writing and identify the applicable adjustment or refund policy.

Include invoices/payment history and the technical case number. The admin center’s Billing area provides access to subscription, invoice, payment-history, and order-management information.^5^
