Greetings,

My company, Bridgeport Consulting, has a MIcrosoft 365 business plan with multiple licenses. The admin has sent me a link to use a license for Microsoft 365. However, I cannot use the link because my company email is already used for a Microsoft personal account. How can I create a business account with my company email address? Hello Lori,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Community

Regarding your personal Microsoft account, having a personal account associated with the same email address can sometimes cause sign-in confusion, but it does not create or activate a Microsoft 365 Business license. The license must be assigned to a work account managed by your organization's administrator.

Typically, your organization's Microsoft 365 administrator must first create a user account for you in the Microsoft 365 admin center and then assign a license to that account. Please ask your administrator to verify the following:

    1. Sign in to the Microsoft 365 Admin Center ( https://admin.cloud.microsoft/)
    2. Go to Users > Active users.
    3. Check whether a work account exists for ******@bridgeportllc.com.
    4. If it does not exist, create a new user account using that email address.
    5. Assign an available Microsoft 365 Business license to the user.
    6. Provide you with the temporary password and sign-in information.

If a work account has already been created, try signing in at https://portal.office.com/Home/ and select Work or school account if prompted.

To better understand the situation, could you confirm:

    • Has your administrator already created a Microsoft 365 user account for you and assigned a license?
    • When you sign in, do you see a choice between Personal account and Work or school account?
    • Are you receiving any specific error message when attempting to use the license?

This information will help determine whether the issue is with account creation, license assignment, or a sign-in conflict.

Your Microsoft 365 administrator must create and license a separate work or school account for you using the company-domain address; the existing personal Microsoft account does not need to be deleted.

Personal Microsoft accounts and organizational work accounts are separate identity types. They may use the same email address, but they are not synchronized and have separate passwords and account settings.^1^

Steps for your Microsoft 365 administrator

The administrator—not the employee—creates the business account:

    1. Sign in to the Microsoft 365 admin center.
    2. In Dashboard view, go to Users → Active users → Add a user.
In Simplified view, select Add user.
    3. Enter your name and set the username to your company address, such as [Email], by selecting the company domain from the Domains list.
    4. Create or automatically generate a temporary password.
    5. Under Assign product licenses:
      • Select the employee’s country or region.
      • Select the appropriate Microsoft 365 Business license.
      • Leave the required apps enabled.
    6. Select Finish adding.
    7. Securely provide the new username and temporary password to the employee.

Creating the account and assigning its license are both required before it can access the organization’s Microsoft 365 services.^2^

If your address already appears under Users → Active users, the administrator should open that existing organizational user and assign the available license rather than create another user.

Sign in with the new business account

After the administrator confirms that the account and license are ready:

    1. Open a private or incognito browser window to avoid automatically reusing the personal session.
    2. Go to Microsoft 365 and select Sign in.
    3. Enter the company email address and the temporary password supplied by the administrator.
    4. If prompted to choose an account type, select Work or school account, not Personal account.
    5. Change the temporary password and complete any multifactor-authentication registration requested by the company.
    6. To activate the desktop applications on Windows, open Word or Excel and select File → Account → Sign In, then use the work-account credentials.[^3^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Sign in to Microsoft 365")

If the administrator cannot select bridgeportllc.com

The administrator should verify that the company domain is available in the organization’s Microsoft 365 tenant. Until the custom domain is configured, the administrator can create the account using the tenant’s provided onmicrosoft.com address. Microsoft 365 business tenants initially receive an onmicrosoft.com domain and can subsequently add their own custom domain.^1^

Do not redeem the business license through the existing personal account. The license must be assigned to the organizational user by a User Administrator or License Administrator.
