Get this Microsoft error message when trying to add email account on Mail on iphone (no issues for ipad and imac)

We’re unable to complete your request. Inavlid request. The provided value for the input parameter ‘redirect_uri’ is not valid. The expected value is a URI which matches a redirect URI registered for this client application.

Hello Brett Cheatley,

The redirect_uri message means the Microsoft sign-in process is already starting, so this does not appear to be a basic-authentication issue.

Could you confirm:

Who hosts the custom-domain mailbox, such as Microsoft 365, Outlook.com, GoDaddy, or another provider?
When adding it on the iPhone, did you select Microsoft Exchange, Outlook.com, or Other?
Can the same account be added successfully to the Outlook for iOS app on that iPhone?

If the mailbox is hosted by Microsoft 365 or Exchange Online, Apple and Microsoft both instruct users to select Microsoft Exchange, not Outlook.com. If Exchange was already selected and Outlook for iOS works, the failure is likely specific to Apple Mail’s Microsoft sign-in handoff.

Thank you for confirming. Since the same Microsoft 365 Exchange account works in Apple Mail on the iPad, the mailbox and password are likely fine. The error appears specific to the Microsoft sign-in handoff on the iPhone.

Could you check whether the account can be added successfully to the Outlook for iOS app on that same iPhone?

If Outlook works, update the iPhone to the latest iOS version and contact Apple Support, as the problem is isolated to Apple Mail’s sign-in process.

If Outlook also fails, ask your Microsoft 365 administrator to check the Microsoft Entra sign-in logs using the date and time of the failed attempt.

The redirect_uri setting is controlled by the application and cannot normally be corrected from the iPhone or by changing the mailbox settings.

For Apple Mail on iPhone, this usually happens when the Outlook.com or personal Microsoft account was configured with basic authentication instead of modern authentication.

Try this in order:

Remove the account from iPhone:
- Go to Settings > Mail > Accounts.
- Tap the affected account.
- Tap Delete Account.
Add it back using the correct account type:
- Go to Settings > Mail > Accounts > Add Account.
- Choose Outlook.com.
- Complete the Outlook.com sign-in flow.
If the same error continues:
- Remove the account again.
- Go to Settings > Safari.
- Tap Clear History and Website Data.
- Reboot the iPhone.
- Add the account again as Outlook.com.

If the app asks for server and domain, autodiscover is failing. In that case, the mail server host, username, and possibly the Windows domain are required from the mail administrator.
