The next action depends on the exact path in the Easy Anti-Cheat error: close Fortnite and Epic Games Launcher, delete only the file named by EAC if Windows permits normal deletion, and then verify Fortnite again to restore or recheck it.^1^
1. Replace the exact file rejected by EAC
This verification is different from the verification already completed because the rejected file is removed first.
- Reproduce the error and record the complete file path, not just “Microsoft GameInput.”
- Fully exit Fortnite and the Epic Games Launcher:
- Right-click the Epic Games Launcher icon in the notification area.
- Select Exit.
- Open File Explorer and browse to the exact path displayed by EAC.
- Delete only the named file.
- If ordinary deletion works, continue below.
- If Windows denies access, reports that the file is protected/in use, or deletion would require changing ownership or permissions, do not force it. Skip to the Windows repair section.
- Open Epic Games Launcher → Library.
- Select the three dots beside Fortnite → Manage → Verify.
- Restart Windows, then launch Fortnite.
Epic’s documented resolution for Unknown file version is to identify and delete the file reported by EAC so it can be restored or rechecked.^1^
GameInput version [IP Address] being installed and running does not by itself establish that GameInput is defective. The full path determines whether EAC is rejecting a Fortnite-local copy or a Windows-managed component.
2. If the flagged file cannot safely be deleted
Use Microsoft’s Windows image and protected-file repair tools instead of changing permissions on the file:
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Run these commands in order:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
sfc /scannow
- Let SFC reach 100%, restart Windows, and test Fortnite again.
DISM repairs the Windows image used as the repair source, while SFC checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies when possible.^2^
3. Test for a background-software conflict
Since reinstalling Fortnite, repairing Gaming Services, and applying updates did not help, test whether another non-Microsoft service is interfering with EAC:
- Sign in with an administrator account.
- Press Windows+R, enter
msconfig, and select OK.
- Open Services, select Hide all Microsoft services, and then select Disable all.
- Keep Hide all Microsoft services selected; this prevents Microsoft services from being disabled.
- Open Startup → Open Task Manager.
- Disable each enabled startup item, recording what was disabled.
- Restart and test Fortnite.
If Fortnite launches, re-enable half of the disabled services and startup items at a time, restarting and retesting until the conflicting program is identified. Antivirus products, overlays, controller utilities, and RGB tools are examples to investigate—not confirmed causes.
If Fortnite still shows the same error during a clean boot, background applications and non-Microsoft services are unlikely to be responsible.^3^
After testing, restore normal startup:
- Run
msconfig.
- Select General → Normal Startup.
- Re-enable the startup applications in Task Manager.
- Restart Windows.
If the error remains
Capture a screenshot containing the complete EAC message and file path, then contact Epic Games Support. EAC and Fortnite are Epic components, and the precise rejected path is necessary to distinguish a game file from a Windows-managed GameInput file. Avoid repeatedly reinstalling Fortnite or repairing Gaming Services, since those steps have already been completed without resolving this file-version error.
