    Try these steps in order:

    1. Update Office
      • Open Word.
      • Go to File > Account.
      • Under Product Information, select Update Options > Update Now.
      • If Update Now is not shown, select Enable Updates first.
    2. Start Word in Safe Mode to check add-ins
      • Open Run.
      • Type the Word safe mode command and start Word that way.
      • If Word opens in Safe Mode, the problem is likely an add-in.
      • In Word, go to File > Options > Add-ins.
      • In the Manage list, disable add-ins one at a time. If there is also a COM Add-ins option, check that too.
    3. Repair Office
      • Use the Office repair option and try a Quick Repair first.
      • If that does not help, run Online Repair.
    4. Check Windows updates and drivers
      • On Windows 10: Start > Settings > Update & security > Windows Update > Check online for updates from Microsoft Update.
      • On Windows 11: Start, type settings, open Windows Update, then select Check for updates.
      • Install available updates.
      • Also update device drivers, especially video card, printer, mouse, and keyboard drivers.
    5. Reinstall Microsoft 365 if repair does not fix it
      • Use the uninstall troubleshooter to remove Microsoft 365.
      • Restart the PC.
      • Install Microsoft 365 again.
      • Note: the uninstall troubleshooter requires Windows 10 or higher and cannot uninstall Office 2024.

If the freeze started during setup or install, close all Office apps, restart the computer, and then try opening Word again.

    Hi @Lea Basile Lazarus

To help narrow down the issue, could you please confirm the following?

    • Does Word freeze immediately when you open it, or only when opening or editing a document?
    • Are you using Windows 10 or Windows 11?
    • What is your Word version and build? You can find this under File > Account > About Word.
    • Do Excel and PowerPoint work normally, or do they freeze too?

In the meantime, please try these steps:

    • Start Word in Safe Mode: Press Win + R, type winword /safe, and press Enter. Check whether Word responds normally.
    • Disable add-ins: If Word works in Safe Mode, an add-in may be causing the issue. Disable Word add-ins (File > Options > Add-ins, at the bottom, select COM Add-ins and click Go >Uncheck all add-ins), restart Word and test again.
    • Repair Microsoft 365: Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Microsoft 365 > Modify, select Quick Repair, and test Word again. If the issue persists, try Online Repair.
