Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
Save features in Office Home 2021 are not intentionally restricted because support is ending. In this scenario, the more likely cause is that Office is using the wrong license state or account, which can make Excel behave as if a Microsoft 365 subscription is required.
Try this in order:
- In Excel, go to File > Account.
- Check the signed-in account.
- If Excel shows a different Microsoft, work, or school account, sign out and sign back in with the account that was used to redeem the one-time Office 2021 purchase.
- In the same File > Account page, check Product Information.
- If it shows Microsoft 365 instead of the purchased perpetual version such as Office Home & Student 2021, Excel is using the wrong license.
- Update Office.
- Open an Office app.
- Go to File > Account > Update Options > Update Now.
- If the product still shows the wrong license, uninstall the current Office installation and reinstall the purchased version from the Microsoft account services page that holds the Office 2021 license.
- After reinstalling, sign in with that same licensed account.
- If the Save commands are available but saving fails, also check common Excel save blockers:
- The destination folder must allow Read, Write, Modify, and Delete permissions.
- If saving to a network or external drive, try saving to a different local drive first.
- If the file path and name exceed 218 characters, Excel can return Filename is not valid.
- Antivirus software can interrupt Excel while it creates and renames its temporary save file.
- If disk space is low, Excel can return Disk is Full.
- If Excel still will not save, try the built-in workarounds:
- File > Save As and save with a new file name.
- Move the worksheets to a new workbook: press Shift+F11 to add a filler sheet, select the original sheets, right-click them, choose Move or copy, select (New Book), then save the new workbook.
- Save in a different Excel format such as .xlsx or .xlsm.
- If the problem seems app-wide, test whether an add-in is interfering.
- Close Excel.
- Start Excel while holding Ctrl until prompted to start in Safe Mode, then select Yes.
- Open a workbook and test saving.
- If saving works in Safe Mode, a third-party add-in or startup file is likely causing the issue.
