Microsoft Office Home & Business 2021 for Mac licence no longer working

I purchased a perpetual Microsoft Office Home & Business 2021 for Mac licence, which is registered in my Microsoft account.

Since updating to Excel version 16.114.1 (build 26102031) on macOS Golden Gate 27.0.1, Office no longer recognises my licence and displays:

“License not found. Your Office 2021 license is not supported with this version of the application.”

I have already run the Microsoft Office License Removal Tool and installed the official Office packages for versions 16.113.4 and 16.114, but Excel continues to show version 16.114.1.

Please confirm whether this is a known compatibility or licensing issue and provide a solution that allows me to use my existing perpetual Office 2021 licence without purchasing Microsoft 365.

Rgds, Morten

First, follow the instructions here for complete uninstall.

https://support.microsoft.com/office/office-for-mac/troubleshoot-office-for-mac-issues-by-completely-uninstalling-before-you-reinstall?apid=ets

Then install this slightly older version 16.114: https://res.public.onecdn.static.microsoft/mro1cdnstorage/C1297A47-86C4-4C1F-97FA-950631F94777/MacAutoupdate/Microsoft_365_and_Office_16.114.26101123_BusinessPro_Installer.pkg?atp=ets

After that, open any Office app, such as Word or Excel. From the top menu, select Help > Check for Updates. When Microsoft AutoUpdate opens, uncheck Automatically keep Microsoft apps up to date, then confirm by clicking Turn Off.

This is a known Office for Mac licensing issue pattern affecting perpetual licenses, including Office Home & Business 2021, where Office can fall into reduced functionality mode or show "License not found" on macOS.

Based on the documented resolution path:

    1. Verify macOS version support
      • For the resolved Unknown Error 0x0 / License not found issue, Microsoft’s documented fix requires macOS 12 or higher.
      • The broader July 2026 Office behavior also states that when Office is no longer supported on older operating systems or devices, apps may open and print but not edit, save, or create files until the OS is updated first, then Office is updated.
    2. Update Office through Microsoft AutoUpdate, not by mixing package versions
      • Close all Office apps.
      • Open Finder > Applications > Microsoft AutoUpdate.
      • Review available updates, then select Update All or update the Office apps individually.
      • After updates complete, relaunch Excel and test activation.
    3. If the Mac App Store version was ever installed, remove it and reinstall from Microsoft
      • Microsoft states the licensing helper tool is not installed or used for Mac App Store downloads.
      • For perpetual licenses such as Office Home & Business 2021, Microsoft documents that Office for Mac uses a device-wide licensing helper tool located under: /Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/com.microsoft.office.licensingV2.helper
      • If App Store builds are present or were previously used, remove the Office apps and reinstall the Microsoft installer package for Office 2021 for Mac.
    4. Repair the licensing helper path
      • Microsoft documents that the helper tool is included in the installer package and, starting with Microsoft AutoUpdate 4.41, it is updated automatically if an older version is found.
      • If Office is not being kept current through Microsoft AutoUpdate, the helper tool can be manually downloaded and deployed using Microsoft’s documented helper tool process.
    5. Since the license removal tool was already run, the next supported step is reinstall + reactivate
      • The license removal tool only clears saved activation data; it does not remove the purchase.
      • After reinstalling from the Microsoft installer, open Word or Excel and sign in with the Microsoft account associated with the Office 2021 purchase to reactivate.
    6. Why Excel may still show 16.114.1
      • If Microsoft AutoUpdate is installed and active, it can bring Office back to the latest available build after a manual package install.
      • That behavior is consistent with Microsoft’s update model and the documented use of AutoUpdate to keep Office and the licensing helper current.

    Supported conclusion:

    • Yes, this is consistent with a known licensing/compatibility issue on Office for Mac.
    • The supported resolution is to ensure the Mac is on a supported OS, then update Office through Microsoft AutoUpdate, and if needed reinstall the Microsoft-downloaded Office 2021 package so the licensing helper tool is present and current.
    • This issue does not mean a Microsoft 365 purchase is required. Microsoft documents perpetual-license activation for Office 2021 for Mac and the helper tool used for that activation.

If the current install came from Microsoft and the issue persists after updating through Microsoft AutoUpdate, the most relevant next step is to reinstall the Microsoft package again and ensure activation is attempted with the same Microsoft account that holds the Office 2021 purchase.

Thank you to those who added solutions to fixing the subscription corralling issue below-

Office Home & Student 2021 for Mac — automatic update broke my paid licence

I also purchased a perpetual licence for Microsoft Office Home & Student 2021 in 2022. My licence is registered to my Microsoft account, and Word and Excel were working correctly on my Mac.

After a recent automatic Office update, both applications stopped recognising my licence and displayed the message:

“No Licence Found — your Office 2021 license is not supported with this version of the application.”

I tried Microsoft's licence removal tool and restarted my Mac, but the problem persisted. I eventually had to remove the Office applications and reinstall an earlier official Microsoft installer to get Word and Excel working again.

This took considerable time and effort to resolve, despite the fact that I had already paid for a perpetual licence.

I am extremely disappointed that an automatic update made software I had purchased unusable. Customers who have paid for a perpetual licence should not have to troubleshoot installation problems or risk losing access to their applications because of an update.

Microsoft, please investigate this issue, explain what went wrong, and provide a permanent fix that allows existing Office 2021 customers to use their purchased software without being pushed towards a Microsoft 365 subscription, because this completely wasted a day of my life.
