The closest case-matched workaround is to remove Office 16.114.1 and reinstall the earlier Office 2021 for Mac build 16.113.4, because the same license-rejection message is being reported on build 26102031 after the Office 2021 support cutoff.^1^
Reinstall the earlier Office 2021 build
This is a current Q&A workaround, not yet a Microsoft-confirmed root-cause fix.^2^
- Back up any local Outlook data or custom templates.
- Quit every Office application.
- Open Finder → Applications.
- Select Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote, then Control-click → Move to Trash.
- Obtain the Office for Mac 16.113.4 package from Microsoft’s Office for Mac update history/package archive. Do not use an installer from an unofficial download site.
- Install 16.113.4, open Word, and activate it using the Microsoft account under which the December 2021 purchase appears.
- Confirm Word → About Word reports Office 2021 and version 16.113.4, then test editing and saving.
- Until Microsoft publishes a correction, do not reinstall 16.114.1.
Removing the applications does not remove documents, but the backup in step 1 protects locally stored Outlook data and customizations.
End of support versus licence ownership
Office 2021 reached end of support on October 13, 2026. That means no further security updates or technical support; it does not convert the product into Microsoft 365 or turn a one-time purchase into an expired subscription.^3^ Office 2021 is documented as a one-time purchase for one PC or Mac.^4^
If the rollback still rejects the licence
Work through only the applicable branches:
- Check the macOS version.
Go to Apple menu → About This Mac. If it is earlier than macOS 12 Monterey, current Office activation requirements cannot be installed. Microsoft specifies macOS 12 and Office 16.83 as the minimum versions for the July 2026 licensing update.^5^
In that case, update macOS first or install the purchase on a supported Mac from the Microsoft account’s Products you’ve purchased → Install option.
- If Office originally came from the Mac App Store, replace it.
App Store builds cannot use perpetual Office licences. Remove those applications and install the Office 2021 package downloaded directly from Microsoft.^6^
- Reset local licence data with Microsoft’s tool.
Since ordinary sign-in and licence refresh have already failed, use the separate License Removal Tool:
- Quit Office.
- Download and run Microsoft’s License Removal Tool.
- Select Continue → Install, supplying the Mac administrator password.
- Open Word and sign in with the account showing the Office 2021 purchase.
- If asked to select a licence, choose the Office 2021 one-time purchase.
- Restart the Mac after activation.^7^
- Check the perpetual-licence helper.
In Finder, choose Go → Go to Folder and enter:
/Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/
Confirm that com.microsoft.office.licensingV2.helper exists. Office Home & Business 2021 uses this helper for device-wide activation; it is included with Microsoft’s installer but not with Mac App Store installations.^8^ If it is absent, reinstall Office from Microsoft rather than copying the file from another Mac.
If 16.113.4 on macOS 12 or later still fails after the official licence reset, report it through Microsoft’s Mac activation support flow as an emerging activation issue, including the exact versions, build number, purchase date, and a screenshot showing the product in the Microsoft account.^9^
